  6. “Laura Alice Bracken, a #Geelong-based artist, started building her own cyberdeck as an extension of her creative practice, in which she was experimenting with #MIDI controllers that take #biofrequencies from #plants and transform them into #soundwaves.

But Bracken, 39, wanted something she could take out into #nature and, after falling down a rabbit hole online, her mind started to widen to the world of #cyberdecks.

The device she is making – housed inside a vintage abalone shell – will also double as an e-reader.

“I just found out my #Kindle is about to be made redundant,” she says (Amazon recently announced they would no longer support #eReaders made before 2012).”

“It is a perfectly good Kindle ... so why is it suddenly going to be trash? It’s because they want to sell new ones.”

  16. @bookstodon
It's interesting, I've really enjoyed reading on my different ereaders over the years, I still do, but I seem to be drifting back to physical books lately. Ebooks are really convenient, but at least for newer titles they aren't much cheaper than a paperback, if at all.
I also find that I remember physical books better (and audiobooks the least). There's also a certain sense of satisfaction and contentment of looking at my shelves.

  26. I've been working on an implementation in Go of the KOReader Sync stuff for a self-hostable sync server

    github.com/Brunty/koreader-sync

Are there others out there that also do this? Yes

Did this need to exist? Maybe not

Am I having fun working on it as it's a simple project to get to grips with some stuff in Go because I'm new to that language? Yes

Am I already using it as the target for KOReader Sync on my #PocketBook Era Color? Yes

  36. So the Surface is kind of a bust right now, but I did have some success reviving my old 1st edition Nook. Luckily this was from a time that batteries were still normally pretty easy to replace, so swapping in a new battery was easier than making breakfast.

Still has a bunch of books I loaded on it too. It's weird to look back on what I was reading and interested almost 2 decades ago. Even my wallpaper is a throw back to the late 2000s 😂 #eink #ereaders #retrotech
