In three hours, at 12:43Z, it will be the #Equinox; #Autumnal in the #NorthernHemisphere and #Vernal in the #SouthernHemisphere. It’s marked by the #Sun being directly overhead at the #Equator at local #Noon, or somewhere in the eastern #AtlanticOcean this time, Here, there has been persistent heavy rain all morning and it presages the transformation to #Autumn.

The #September #Equinox will occur in about 15 minute from now (06:49Z) when the #Sun will be directly overhead about the #Equator at #midday somewhere over the #IndianOcean. #Autumn begins for people on this half of the world and #Spring for the other half.

_Anopheles stephensi_, a #malaria-#vectoring #mosquito usually found in urban environments in #India, the #Arabian #Peninsula, and other parts of #Asia, has now been detected for the first time south of the #equator in #Africa.
The authors suggest that this #vector may actually be quite prevalent and requires more sampling and testing in malaria-#endemic areas.

#TravelPhotography from #OnThisDay in 2019 when we cruised over the #Equator in the #Pacific and got to experience the Crossing The Line Ceremony at sea. This is the event that turns pollywogs (those who haven't crossed the equator) into shellbacks, and it involves a lot of mess and some kissing of fish. King Neptune is involved too and it's all a great bit of fun.
