In just about ten and a half hours time, the September #equinox will occur as the #Sun crosses overhead on the #Equator on its apparent journey to the #SouthernHemisphere. This means #Autumn for us in the #NorthernHemisphere and #Spring for the rest. The Sun rose due #East and will set due #West here, for only the second time this year.

The #VernalEquinox (in the #NorthernHemisphere) will occur in about an hour and half’s time of positing at 09:01Z. The #Sun will be precisely overhead at noon on the #Equator just off the coast of #Somalia when this happens. For the whole planet, #day and #night will be of equal length (as makes no odds) and #Sunrise will be due #East and #Sunset will be due #West. Roll on #Spring.

40 years ago today, aboard RRS Discovery III on my first trip to the Southern Ocean and #Antarctica, we crossed the #Equator into the Southern Hemisphere. King Neptune's court convened on the foredeck to charge and punish all of us newcomers, after which we were baptised in a makeshift pool.

Two of the photos here show me receiving my punishment and then using the shower in the pool to try wash off some of the sticky gunk that had been poured over my head. I would credit the photographer if I could remember who I lent my camera to.

#TravelPhotography from #OnThisDay in 2019 when we cruised over the #Equator in the #Pacific and got to experience the Crossing The Line Ceremony at sea. This is the event that turns pollywogs (those who haven't crossed the equator) into shellbacks, and it involves a lot of mess and some kissing of fish. King Neptune is involved too and it's all a great bit of fun.

A #HongKong 🇨🇳 -based company will build and operate a #spaceport covering at least ten square kilometres (four square miles) in #Djibouti 🇩🇯. The facility will include seven #launchpads and three #rocket 🚀 testing pads.
