Remember when #DonaldTrump wanted to acquire #Greenland by force if necessary because it was so huge (one of his reasons)? Well, this stems from a common mistake due to using the #Mercator projection. 55 countries in the African Union now voted to replace it with the Equal Earth projection, created in 2018 by Bojan Šavrič, Bernhard Jenny, and Tom Patterson

Map projections in the news! And we cartographers are all relieved that it's not the Gall-Peters Projection again. The newer Equal Earth Projection is a much better alternative to Mercator.

Zunehmender Protest gegen die Mercator-Karte
Stattdessen wird die Verwendung der Equal Earth Projection gefordert.
Die Projektionen sind ja nicht einfach der Versuch einer Quadratur des Kreises, sondern quasi der Quadratur einer Kugel 😅 …da sind Kompromisse gefragt.
