  1. #Mediation & #DAG: “The main mediation models show that there is a partial mediation between cognitive ability, gender, & self-reported well-being, as well as between gender, cognitive ability, & well-being.” #Epiverse #CausalInference frontiersin.org/journals/psych

  2. New paper with everything you might need to know about CAMELOT & its development. It's a tool for assessing the methodology of qualitative research for Cochrane reviews:

    onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/fu

Also, TIL that Cochrane has a qualitative research methods glossary: training.cochrane.org/QES-glos

  3. There's an important new review about the effectiveness of masks from @trishgreenhalgh & colleagues.

Digging into it & comparing it with the controversial Cochrane review clarified several issues for me, & left me optimistic about masks & scientific consensus.

If you've ever wondered how meta-analyses can have different conclusions on the same question, this post is for you, too!

  5. Hello #rstats programmers! I want to promote this event that I am helping to run:

Come give an R Programming Lightning Talk, co-hosted by the @RUGatHDSI and the Harvard Kennedy School Data & Donuts program! If you're in the #Boston area you should join in-person

I know lots of #EpiVerse folks are using R — come share your #epidemiology R wisdom!

We have a $50 gift card to give away to the voted best-lightning talk, and I think there will be some other prizes, especially in-person.

  6. #Editors must be mindful of #AI use accusations: “One reviewer wrote that it was “obviously ChatGPT”, and the handling editor vaguely agreed, saying that they found “the writing style unusual” #AcademicChatter #AcademicTwitter #Academia #PeerReview #Publication #EpiVerse nature.com/articles/d41586-024

#EpiVerse #SNDS

  9. New #epiverse #rstats blog post!

"Lesser-known reasons to prefer apply() over for loops"

    epiverse-trace.github.io/posts
The debate on for loops vs apply() often crystallizes around (misconceptions on) performance.
But there are good reasons to prefer apply() to for loops. They revolve around readability and robustness:
    1. Clarity of intent
    2. Code conciseness
    3. No variable leak
    4. Pipeability.

  10. New @biorxivpreprint! Quite proud to be part of this epic modelling study led by Dr. Melinda Rostal. We show that trans-ovarial transmission (TOT) is required to maintain Rift Valley Fever at local scales. But TOT allows RVF to persist even in the face of high vaccination, suggesting that intense, multi-pronged approaches are required if elimination is the goal.

Last week was the 10th international gathering of EBHC teachers & developers in Sicily. I reflect on some of the major themes - "living" systematic reviews & guidelines, pandemic divisions, & equity in EBHC.

  25. How come you generally don't have to think about installing system dependencies when testing #rstats packages in the cloud (e.g., on GitHub Actions)? 🤔

Short answer: it's because the pak package 📦 is doing some amazing magic behind the scenes.

Long answer: jump down the rabbit hole with this new blog post where we explore the various layers of complexity pak deals with to achieve this result:

  26. This paper builds on our previously published open data set harvesting novel AMR emergence events from clinical reports: doi.org/10.12688/f1000research

You can also find all the code, outputs and diagnostics on GitHub and Zenodo: github.com/ecohealthalliance/a , doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7051952

We have a reproducible pipeline based on #rstats, {drake}, and {renv}. The branching features from {drake} (and now {targets}) are great for doing multiverse analyses.
