  1. How do you tell if an orchid has root rot? For reference, check out the image below. This is a dendrobium that has pretty rotten roots.

It also has a fire ant nest in the roots (see the little orange stuff bunched up near the center bottom). And I also found a flatworm curled up in its roots 🫣

Dendrobium seem to mostly prefer being up in the canopy, and I had left this one on the ground, so it got fully waterlogged, even though the stems and leaf seemed to still be green and perky.

I shook out the ants, killed the flatworm, and set it in the nook of a tree with moss covering its roots. It'll be a slow recovery, but I think it will make it.

  3. Epiphytes are not that abundant close to the Amazon coast near Bragança, possibly due to a more pronounced dry season and to deforestation, which started very early over here. However, we manage to cultivate a couple of native epiphytes like bromeliads and aroids, mainly from the remaining inundated forests. By squishing the fruits and putting the sticky seeds in cracks in the bark of trees, we even manage to propagate them.

  4. More on the mystery #Hydnophytum species at #botanicalGardens #Copenhagen,
    without tag.

    At first i thought H. moseleyanum -
overlooking that the group might be two species in fact,
one with round leaves (H. moseleyanum?),
one with slimmer elongated leaves (H. formicarum?).
    The fruit might shed light.

Although, although ... last picture shows both leaf forms on one plant?

  5. Five key extinction risks facing the world’s plants and fungi, Kew report

"Plants are currently going extinct 500 times faster than before humans existed"

"Almost half of flowering plant species are under threat."

"By carting species around the world and losing unique threatened species, we are making regions that were once really distinct much more similar, so we are blurring the edges of our global biogeographical regions.”

  6. Just re-noticed that my Easter #cactus decided to just grow as a regular cactus for one of it segments. The whole rest of the plant is normal including the segments futher along the same branch, just this one segment is like this. #weird #mutant #cacti #Epiphytes #EasterCactus #ChristmasCactus

  7. my neighbor's husband was thinning out his #orchids, so now i am the owner of this tangled mess of little red orchids.

these are #epiphytes & as far as i can tell, don't need any soil at all. roots come out of the stem, and as the stem gets longer, more roots come out of the newer parts of the stem.

the flowers are tiny, but they are cute ^-^

any tips for fertilizing plants that are mostly or entirely in the air?

i have some #vanilla plants that are crawling their way through the forest. i have no idea where they touch the ground, but they have plenty of air roots.

i was thinking of fertilizing them, but realized i don't know what to do. maybe a mist or spray bottle? but then what goes in the bottle? at what concentration?

    thanks in advance!

  9. as someone who likes to grow orchids, i enjoy seeing how they grow "in the wild". it helps me understand the conditions i'm trying to create for them in cultivation.

observing orchids in the forest led me to creating "forest floor mix" medium (using stuff i find on the forest floor), & now "forest canopy" medium (using stuff that is found in the canopy: moss, leaf litter, dried branches, etc.). yay learning!
