Walcott's epic poetic work is at once a refiguring of Homer and the colonial history of St. Lucia, of the indigenous everywhere, of the myths which mark poet and people. An extraordinary layering of all.

Walcott's epic poem of St. Lucia, but also of postcolonial culture, Homeric epics, the Revolutionary War, American Western expansion, language and art, aging, tourist economies, and a host of other layers is both poem and dream-state, compelling story and unnerving memory.

An epic poetic work of seven small volumes combined as quest, immigration challenge, and literary escape, multiple themes interweaving in probably Walcott's greatest work.

Classic, yes, but Shelley's long poem works overhard to propound its argument amid a myth made melodrama.

Far more brief than "Lost," Milton's later follow-up to the story of humankind's redemption focuses only on Christ's temptation in the desert and expands the devil's arguments in a fascinating lesson of morality, fully rounding out the themes from "Paradise Lost."

One of the most canonical works of Western literature, the beauty of Milton's verse endures, though close reads may still find his mores troubling at places.

A massive tome of modern epic poetry, Kazantzakis thought of this as his greatest work, though he had written 𝑍𝑜𝑟𝑏𝑎 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐺𝑟𝑒𝑒𝑘 and 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑇𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝐶ℎ𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑡. This will take me a couple of months!

Epoch by Dave JIlk is science fiction infused with philosophy, psychology, and mythology, all brought together as an epic poem with extensive references. It is not recommended for casual consumption; in the words of Herman Melville, “read it if you can.”

For many people, "epic poem" means epic story told in verse; think "The Odyssey." But Linnea Axelsson's epic poem "Ædnan: An Epic" is a real world story with political and social ramifications, as I learned when we did this exclusive interview.

So This has been what I have been working on most of the last week. I feel like I have found my voice with the realization that #GravitysRainbow is a prose poem and I am writing in the tradition of Jim Dodge and Richard Brautigan by way of that realization.

all constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated.

“Sing, O Muse, of the man of many devices, who wandered full many ways after he had sacked the sacred citadel of Troy. Many were the men whose cities he saw and whose mind he learned, aye, and many the woes he suffered in his heart upon the sea, seeking to win his own life and the return of his comrades.”

Looking for more narrative poems and prose either inspired by or creatively adapting epic literature, like Alice Oswald's Memorial, Anne Carson's Autobiography of Red, Maria Dahvana Headley's Beowulf translation and Derek Walcott's Omeros

Any suggestions?
