In the realm of Arafaze, a small number of priests and priestesses keep magic's secrets closely guarded. Their first duty above all others is watching for malevolent incursions from the unseen world, and forcing the apparitions back before the unknowing populace can glimpse them.

A sacred quest for wisdom becomes a dangerous struggle for power in The Wandering Stars by J. D. Rasch.

This thoughtful, character-driven fantasy explores ambition, redemption, compassion, and the choices that shape a world.

I especially appreciated its rich setting, complex characters, and meaningful emotional arcs.

#ScribesAndMakers 9/21—What character from one of your own books or someone else's would you want to spend a day with? What would you do?

The answer would be West.

I'd love to spend a day with him (and Jeko), to just chat, to see his mule, maybe go for a ride if they let me borrow Kara.

He first appears in West Flows (Winds & Pillars 2), but he does show up in later books, as well. He and Jeko get around.

I just have a soft spot for those two.

#PennedPossibilities 1133: "Did your MC attend school? What sort of education did they have?"

Moon did not go to school, and everything she learned was controlled by the Priests who supervised her House.

In other words, she learned very little.

Which does bite her when she escapes.

#WordWeavers 9/17: By the end of your story, how many injuries has your MC had?

Moon escapes lightly, considering all my other characters in the series. The worst she got was a terrible set of blisters when she insisted she needed to walk to West Harbor instead of riding a mule.

I didn't even make her seasick. Wasn't that nice of me?

You can read Moon Rises now (Book 8 of the Winds & Pillars series).

#PennedPossibilities 1131: Which landmark in your world stands as a permanent reminder of a major event? Describe it.

All eight pyramids in the Holy Empire are reminders of the terrible war that happened centuries ago. They were built to protect the people of the Holy Empire, holding up the magical Veil.

They look like an Aztec pyramid, with stairs on one side and half-orb on top. They are often stained with blood.

Gute Nacht, Freunde.

Today, I finally broke through the Wall of Awful and wrote a difficult scene for the Wolves.

And now Timothy is confused and upset and his world is slowly starting to tilt more (it has never quite stopped since the events in A Wolf's Mate).

I'm quite happy with the story now. And next up is even more action!

Oh, and btw, in case you missed it, Moon Rises is out and available in all stores (even Smashwords now).

#PennedPossibilities 1128: "Does your MC have a name that’s unique?"

The point of the character names in the Winds & Pillars is that they are NOT unique in their setting.

Moon's name refers to the power she has, nothing else. Within the novels this is rarely mentioned, but the names are simply a designation. They are meant to dehumanize their bearer.

I doubt readers actually realize this, but I did that on purpose.

Release Day!

Moon Rises is now (finally!) live in almost all the stores. This time, it's Smashwords that's slow. Google finally got its act together this afternoon, at least.

You can grab Moon from my own store (which would make me very happy):

https://shop.hannah-steenbock.de/b/moonpillars

Or you can buy it from your favorite supplier of eBooks (including Bookshop.org):

https://books2read.com/MoonPillarsEmpire

At any rate, enjoy Book 8 of the Winds & Pillars!

#WordWeavers 11/9: What does your MC believe about themselves at the beginning of the story that turns out to be completely wrong?

Oh, Moon thinks she knows plenty about life in the Holy Empire and that it'll be easy to blend in and escape.

She has no idea how wrong she is.

Mwuahahahaha.

(Actually uploading the book now, so it should be available soon. Will announce it with all links on Sunday.)

UPDATE: It's now at $2.99, as planned.

Well, Amazon's systems are clearly a mess.

They have been trying to make South Breaks not free on COM, and haven't managed to do so even after a full week.

Too much AI vibe coding, is my guess, but who knows.

Anyway, you can still get South Breaks for free - on Amazon COM only! - so here's your last chance. No idea how much longer they will take to fix that.
