Loss of koala habitat shows ‘total failure’ of our nature laws. In 2025 alone, nearly 4,000 ha of essential koala habitat was cleared under federal approvals—the highest annual loss since koalas were first listed in 2012. Since 2011, a staggering 2.3 million hectares of likely koala habitat has been destroyed—with 391,170 ha of that in NSW through native forest logging. Agriculture continues to be the primary driver, and loopholes and weak enforcement mean koalas keep paying the price. Conservationists are calling for real reform of the EPBC Act—including closing native logging exemptions and creating an independent environmental watchdog.
