  1. #Solarpunk, when life and innovation become part of the decision-making process

Dylan Field, CEO of Figma, gave an interview at #SXSW2024 - a festival of music, film and interactive media - where he shared his vision of design for the future by highlighting an interesting movement: Solarpunk. This movement offers a less anxiety-provoking and much more positive perspective on shaping a world where life and sustainability are at the heart of every innovation.

Except: "#Solarpunk is rooted in a wider landscape of movements and currents of thought that share similar objectives of #sustainability, #inclusion and #innovation.

#Ecodesign is an approach that aims to reduce the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle, finding innovative and sustainable solutions and encouraging the use of #EnvironmentallyFriendly manufacturing practices. The movement is also strongly guiding the approach of current websites by limiting the media used, calculating the CO2 impact of each page and favouring sustainable hosting solutions.

The #SlowLife, or #SlowMovement, which encourages a reduction in the frenetic pace of modern life and a re-evaluation of priorities, focusing on the quality of well-being rather than the quantity of activities. This resonates with the Solarpunk movement in its more #ThoughtfulApproach to #technology and #consumption.

#RegenerativeDesign which aims for an approach where systems and processes restore and strengthen #ecosystems promoting environmental health and #resilience. This movement also shares the same positive vision of creating solutions that benefit both human beings and the #environment.

#NewPedestrianism, or #NewUrbanism, share common concerns for the sustainability of urban environments. It aims to reduce dependence on cars by promoting walking, cycling and public transport, and to reduce carbon emissions in order to improve air quality. But that's not all: New Pedestrianism, like Solarpunk, aspires to create neighbourhoods that meet human needs, where it is pleasant and safe to live, work and play, while fostering conviviality between communities."

  3. #LibraryOfThings - #OnlineToolkit

"A Library of Things (LoT) is a community hub for sharing all kinds of stuff. LoTs follow the traditional mechanics of a library while pushing the boundaries of what can be borrowed: tools, instruments, camping gear, toys, kitchen gadgets, and more! They build community while providing a low-cost, #EnvironmentallyFriendly way to meet our material needs.

"There are roughly 2,000 formally established LoTs worldwide, as well as countless informal ones. Modern LoTs have been in operation since 1978, but informal resource sharing has always been an essential part of the human experience. Many of the largest LoTs in the US started to lend tools, but they can contain whatever items the community of members needs that can be shared safely and effectively.

"#Shareable has supported the development of several LoTs over the past decade. Projects have included an official advisory role to the former mayor of Seoul, South Korea, as they developed a pilot program with 32 lending libraries in apartment buildings, an inspiration and advisory role on the creation of #LaBOM, a three-story community center and #SharingHub in Montreuil, France, and the incubation of the #USToolLibraryAlliance.

"In 2022, we began a multi-year international research project into the current state of LoTs. Following the public release of our findings, we hosted a year-long Library of Things #CoLab and Fellowship and published a free, comprehensive Library of Things Toolkit."

  5. Fun With NFC Cards

I’ve been messing around with NFC cards and trying to figure out if I should just self-roll my own virtual business card (like Popl.co and Dot).

I’m a big business networker. I’ve been an entrepreneur for more than 18 years. (Yikes!)

I do love a good business card, but I’m also intrigued, and have been for a while, with the NFC tap card business cards.

It’s actually not that difficult to do and the way around the NFC vcard blockage on iOS is to host the vcard on a web server and directly link to it via a button.

And the best way to get the other person’s contact info is to setup a contact form on your links page for them to exchange the contact info with you.

So instead of paying for Popl.co on a monthly/yearly basis or one time for Dot, etc. maybe spin up your own. I’m tempted to do that.

    I’ll report back.

  7. Producing #EnvironmentallyFriendly #Fertilizer from Human #Urine
    Apr 30, 2020

"Dr. Adey Desta, an Ethiopian Scientist has successfully produced an environmental friendly fertilizer from human urine. Unlike the synthetic fertilizers in the market, Dr. Adey's research has produced a cheap, water insoluble fertilizer that guards against leaching which in turn contaminates Rivers, Lakes, underneath water table etc. during rainy seasons."

  9. The World and I chat for time to time and occasionally we record that conversation for posterity.

I quite like the World. I mean, not just to live on, but to talk to. I find it refreshingly honest. It says what it means. It doesn’t beat around the bush. I may not always like what it has to tell me but I have to respect it.

And I would be a fool not to listen.

  11. Hello (applied) statisticians and biostatisticians,

I am the Agricultural Research Biostatistician based at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's Lethbridge Research and Development Centre.

What should I do to make my applied statistics job (i.e., my Performance Agreement) more environmentally-friendly and based on nature-centered values?

    #EcoFriendly and #EnvironmentallyFriendly #WeedKiller: Does It Exist?

    By Stephanie Osmanski
    Updated July 20 2020,

    Excerpt:
"Another eco-friendly alternative to weed killer is enlisting the help of animal friends. Good for the environment and entirely non-toxic, goats can scarf down any unwanted weeds from #kudzu, #OrientalBittersweet, and #ailanthus to #MultifloraRosa, #JapaneseHoneysuckle, and mile-a-minute.

"In fact, some companies — such as #Ecogoats and #GoatsEatWeeds — even rent out goats to homeowners that want eco-friendly help controlling their unwanted noxious weeds. Because a goat’s least favorite food is grass, a goat will eat everything else first before munching on your lawn."

  15. Cleaning and Using Sheep #Wool for Insulation

Posted on July 29, 2020 by Laurence Manchee

Excerpt: "Benefits of sheep wool insulation

Sheep’s wool is an outstanding insulator with as good or better insulation properties as #RoofMate or #RockWool. As opposed to shop-bought insulation the homemade wool is not processed into compact blocks. The loose wool can be pushed into small gaps and does not need to be cut to size, making it is easier to work with.

Sheep’s wool is more #EnvironmentallyFriendly, is not itchy to work with and is fireproof. It regulates humidity, does not burn, purifies the air and is a good sound proofer.

All in all, it is better than any #insulation we have used in the past and is more cost-effective."

  17. Finally finished switching my blog to #jekyll, which is super light, #EnergyEfficient (and thus more #EnvironmentallyFriendly), and lets me get into the back-end nitty-gritties armed only with a vague notion of #HTML coding from teenage years spent on #LiveJournal. Major props to @RyanChartier for enabling me; if you ask him very nicely, he might help you make a simple, lean #webpage, too. (seriously, give him a shout if you're interested)

  23. The '#EnvironmentallyFriendly alternative' way #Dominion Energy is cutting 40 acres of grass 'every few days'

    By: Ellen Ice
    Posted 9:01 AM, Aug 03, 2024

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — "At #SolarFarms in #Chesapeake and #VirginiaBeach, Dominion Energy has found an alternative option to a lawn mower; this one has hooves.

"'It’s an environmentally-friendly alternative, it’s innovative, it’s creative and they do a great job,' said spokesperson Tim Eberly. 'They can eat about 40 acres of grass and vegetation every few days.'

"The flock of 300 sheep and 180 lambs is tended to by a shepherd, along with guard dogs and herding dogs.

“'Our guardian dogs are with the sheep all the time," said Jess Gray with Gray's #Lambscaping. 'They protect the flock when we are not around.'"

    [..]

"The goal of the project is to keep the grass below the panels to maximize output. At Bedford #SolarFarm in Chesapeake, one of the sites where the sheep currently graze, the energy generated powers 17,500 homes."
