Wasp beetle (clytus arietes) sunning itself on one of our hydrangeas this morning. Apparently the wasp mimicry doesn’t deter the birds but hopefully this beetle will avoid the attentions of our marauding robins. #insects #entemology #beetle

Is it a seed or a shadow? No, it's a mystery phytophagous wasp. Someone suggested it's Bruchophagus but we've not tried the keys yet so we'll see.

Another hoverfly from my plot. Myathropa florea, identified by the "batman" logo on its thorax. Very common in most of UK.

Thanks to a gift of Ball and Morris field guide to Britain's Hoverflies, I'm fairly confident that this is Episyrphus balteatus. Yes, it's the most common hoverfly but I'm chuffed to ID it. Common name, the Marmalade Fly. July22. My allotment.
