Just to confirm all stereotypes about the Netherlands: this morning I hopped on my bike early, to present the #EnROADS climate model at a conference for mathematics teachers. Right next to the conference location (located at 0 m above sea level of course) some of the bulb fields are flowering already.
Some of the teachers indicated they liked the design of the graphs in the #EnROADS simulator a lot. So I hope they will start using this great material by Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan School of Management as well!
In case you're also based in the Netherlands and would like to know more about the model or the related Climate Action Simulation, please get in touch!
P.s. I also took a picture of an old-fashioned windmill on my way back home, but it turned out too blurry to post here

Last week I facilitated a Climate Action Simulation at UCo - Utrecht Community. Thanks to the policy proposals by the participants from Isle Utilities, Sustenuto - Strategic Sustainability & Circular Products, Kringloop Nederland, Hika advies and UCo - Utrecht Community, we managed to limit global warming in the #EnROADS climate simulator to 2,1 degrees.
Even for sustainability professionals, the #EnROADS climate simulator provides new insights. The participants were surprised by the relatively large impact we can have on the climate if we limit methane emissions from landfills and fossil fuel extraction sites, for instance.
Let me know in case you are interested in a Climate Action Simulation as well!
Thanks to UCo - Utrecht Community for hosting me, and to Climate Interactive and MIT Sloan School of Management for the great material!

I wrote a new blogpost about the impact of AI on climate change. In this post, I use the #EnROADS climate simulator to explore whether the climate will mostly benefit from the fruits of AI or whether the environmental impact of AI will leave us with a scorched planet. https://www.donutlobby.nl/en/the-impact-of-ai-on-climate-change
This blogpost was inspired by a recent webinar by Climate Interactive "AI and the Climate: Solution or Environmental Threat?", the thesis work of Jennifer Turliuk and the Green IO 🎙️podcast episode hosted by Gaël DUEZ on "Thirsty datacenters in the heart of Silicon Valley with Masheika Allgood"

Next week I'll host another #EnROADS climate action simulation for a group of international students at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht (Hogeschool Utrecht).
In my experience having international perspectives makes the collective learning even better. A recent example:
Student from France: "I think we cannot solve the climate crisis with a democratic system. What we need is a benevolent dictator."
Student who fled from a country where democracy is suppressed: "I would never want to live under a dictator anymore. Freedom is essential to me."I believe first person accounts like this help to get such messages across.
The picture: a map of all the locations in the world where workshops with the #EnROADS simulator developed by MIT Sloan School of Management and Climate Interactive have taken place.

This is a bit wonky, but very good in giving you some idea of which things matter with regards to climate emissions and which don’t make all that much of a difference.
E.g. new energy breakthrough (fusion power): no difference. Population: +-0.1°

#ClimateInteractive and #ProbableFutures presented today about how the #EnROADS #climate scenario simulator can be used with PF's 22.5km-resolution maps of #GlobalWarming impacts for 0.5°C to 3.0°C (above 1850-1900 global avg surface #temperature).
In short, you can use En-ROADS to simulate various mixes of climate/#energy/#EnvironmentalPolicy & see how much #ClimateChange you get, then use PF's maps to see how it affects a given place: temperature, #precipitation, #drought, #wildfire, etc.

It sounds like a better idea than making fertiliser by Haber-Bosch, but I don't think a massive industry on the scale required for effective CCS makes sense. Cutting down more trees or using good land for biomass "crops" seems too slow and somewhat counterproductive to me.
I know many people are saying we need to get to zero GHG emissions AND remove hundreds to thousands of gigatonnes of CO2 by CCS, but whereas we have the technology for the former, we don't for CCS.
Do you use En-ROADS? It is an incredible tool, and has just had a massive update. It aligns with all the main scenarios currently discussed. The baseline scenario is +3.3C by 2100. This is worth reading and the short videos worth watching:
https://www.climateinteractive.org/blog/en-roads-june-2023-baseline-scenario/
You can input your own preferred policies to see the impacts - play with it.
Here are three of mine, you can see all my inputs on the sliders or by clicking the blue triple dots.
A +1.9C scenario, no CCS, energy cost peaking at $33.75/GJ:
A +1.4C scenarion, some CCS, similar energy cost impact:
And a +1.0C scenario that aso generates $170tn of extra tax by 2100 for colonialism reparation. The price to pay? An energy cost spike to $125/Gt. There is no free lunch!

En-ROADS climate simulator has just produced a huge update. They now include climate damages in estimates of economic activity that drives emissions.
Baseline temperature increase is now 3.3°C.

Using the En-ROADS simulator I have modelled a scenario close to this, link below.
Many detailed settings have been adjusted. You can click the blue tripled dots to see them. No model assumption have been changed.
Within the parameter limits available I have applied the maximum rates of tax and fossil fuel phase out, maximum afforestation / minimum deforestation and maximum land use improvements, transition to far lower animal diets, plus and other methane and GHG reductions.
The scenario generates a net $170tn in tax revenue over subsidies which would mostly come from the Global North (GN). This comes from the carbon and FF taxes, and after the transition to renewables is almost complete a $0.01/KWh tax on renewables and nuclear generates the rest.
In the model it is not possible to transfer this for the benefit of the developing nations, but the effect would be to reduce GN GDP/Capita growth and increase that of the GS.
Temperature rise starts to reduce within a few years, +1.0C in 2100 and falling. Atmospheric CO2 is 350ppm in 2100 and falling.
The price to pay for this? Energy costs rise rapidly by a factor of five. There is no free way out of the hole we are in, of course.
