It's a really good week to be a #fungi in the #enoriver state park.

#FootpathFriday along the Eno Quarry trail in the #EnoRiver state park in Durham NC, U.S. This is a partial panorama, the eno river to the left, the quarry to the right, and I am stuck in the middle with a view.

I was walking along the Eno Trace Trail today on the stretch right next to the #enoriver in the state park and I heard a walnut or similar sized object fall from the tree and then I see a green flash and a hear a very muted "thud" just a few feet from me - definitely not the sound a limb or vine would make.

And I looked a bit closer and it was this little fellow, a Rough Green Snake - it fell probably 15 feet or so from a trumpet vine

We are both glad that he/she didn't land directly on me. 😅

Went out to touch grass / get away from my technical debt for a bit and startled this blue-tailed skink into running up a tree on the Buckquarter Creek trail. He was firmly convinced he had found the best hiding place ever... 🦎💙

The color of this drying-out/dormant/stressed moss and lichen on the rocks exposed by the reduced flow in the #enoriver was pretty fabulous from yesterday's #hiking

Zooming in, there's a kind of iridescence on the edges. You can't quite pick that up just standing around - but in the mostly cloudy sun yesterday, it created a kind of glow.

My completely uneducated but observational guess is that the purple is actually caused by bird poop.

Today I learned about #FootpathFriday for the first time from all the posts from yesterday and I think I might now be in serious hashtag love.

I missed the posting day, but not my own footpath on Friday - this one from my second walk of the week along the Laurel Bluffs Trail in the #enoriver state park near Durham, North Carolina.

I'm sure there's a land history somewhere of the actual dates - but for how forests grow in the Piedmont ( https://dukeforest.duke.edu/forest-environment/forest-succession/ ) this is a 70+ year old stand

It was a glorious morning for a walk in the #enoriver state park today - ~60F; scattered clouds in clear blue skies - and yesterday's brief rain definitely brought out all the plants in the park.

Also, the mountain laurel is now starting to bloom in earnest.

A park ranger and student? volunteer? passed behind me and I got to talk to them a bit - they mentioned this was the first controlled burn in that part of the park they've done (it's been closed off since #chantal giving park staff a rare opportunity to do this without impacting visitors)

He mentioned he was looking forward to see how the forest responds.

I said "me too."

In addition to our friendly and knowledgeable #EnoRiverAssociation guide, we were fortunate to have two local genealogy enthusiasts who had each traced their personal ancestry in the area back to the pre-Revolutionary War era. And of course it turned out that they were distantly related...

It was great joining folks at Eno River Association building trails at an upcoming preserve yesterday. While there is so much work yet to be done in this union, and we suffer from the aftermath of a troubled history that still impacts and harms people until this day, I believe that public lands accessible for all to enjoy in principle is one of the most radically beautiful ideas ever.
