#WeekendReading: Gernon et al. show that #EnhancedWeathering of mafic rocks during continental breakup and early seafloor spreading could drive a succession of #anoxic events.
The interactions between #weathering feedback and #ClimateChange are not straightforward.
(Also, remember - weathering releases nutrients) -
"enhanced weathering (EW) of silicate rocks … on farmlands is a promising scalable atmospheric carbon dioxide removal (CDR) strategy"
https://www.pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pnas.2319436121
"modeling suggests that deployment of EW … worldwide could sequester up to two billion metric tons of CO2 annually"
Not bad. But not nearly enough regarding around 37 billion metric tons of CO2 emissions worldwide every year: https://www.statista.com/statistics/276629/global-co2-emissions/

Spent yesterday out in the field helping Quinn Zacharias prepare for their big enhanced weathering field trials! Soon, they'll amend the soils with basalt powder, which will (hopefully!) remove CO2 from the atmosphere.
The project is unique, because they will apply basalt to a complete watershed. Plus the catchment is continuously monitored and has ~60 years of baseline data! Can't wait for their results! 🤓

For carbon dioxide removal (#CDR), does anyone else think of #EnhancedWeathering, which is usually thought of as a terrestrial technique, as just another way to eventually add #alkalinity to the #ocean so it's really ocean CDR and #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement (#OAE)?

New blog by Carbon Drawdown Initiative, showing what #EnhancedWeathering looks like, with pictures from experiments around the world.
More than 50.000 tons of silicate materials were applied in 2022 and more than 500.000 tons are planned for 2023!
Including our experiments in Antwerp that are also on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/enhancedweatheringrocks/
