  6. #JamesHind (sometimes referred to as John Hind; baptized 1616, died 1652) was a 17th-century #highwayman and #Royalist rabble-rouser during the #EnglishCivilWar. He came from the town of #ChippingNorton, #Oxfordshire. He fought in the English Civil War for the Royalist cause. Some reports tell of him assisting the escape of #KingCharlesII after his defeat at the #BattleOfWorcester. After the war, he took up highway robbery against the #Commonwealth forces with his exploits both real.

  11. Ever heard of someone called Great Battell? No, nor has anyone. A perfect example of why should you never trust AI, OCR or automated readers on historical documents. It's because of doozies like this...🤦‍♂️

  14. Interesting observation trawling online archives for references to the dead at battle of #Edgehill 1642.

Contemp. reports say therewere so many bodies they were buried in pits, but you'd think there would still be some recorded in nearby villages, died later of wounds, or taken home & buried.

But there's so little, as if 23rd Oct never happened. Stark compared to other battles w/ so many records.

Is it really just that nearly everyone was buried on site? 🤔

In 1986, the Dutch signed a peace treaty with the Isles of Scilly. They'd forgotten they'd been at war since the 17th century, because no shots were ever fired. How scilly.

  21. Riddle-Poem:

    Episcopal and Cavalier,
The Sons of Ben sing loud and clear,
Advising youth: make much of time.
We share their use of form and rhyme
    But lean toward Presbyterianism.
    Rejecting war and civil schism,
We bring about their due defeat
    By Metaphysical Conceit.

Who are we, and who are they?

  25. Tattershall Castle in Lincolnshire has a number of interesting features, including stained glass windows showing the arms of the families that once owned the castle, fireplaces with heraldic shields and fascinating graffiti.

With regards to the graffiti I have taken photos of a number of them over the years but never found out who the people who carved their names in the stonework were, however, I recently discovered who one person was.

"James Gibson 1642" was the vicar of Horncastle. He was imprisoned at Tattershall by the puritanical 4th Earl of Lincoln Theophilus Clinton for preaching in a rather High Churchy manner...'

  33. Today is the 380th anniversary of the Battle of Guisborough, fought between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians in the English Civil War

I've posted about the battle before: here and here. The conventional thinking was that the battle took place on the east side of the town, in fields off Butt Lane. But recent metal detector finds suggest another site for the battle — on ...
