  1. 💡 Having a little hiccup with the Sunsynk Home Assistant dashboard since we added the Octopus EV charger! The house load breakdown isn't quite right. I've written up what happened and what I tried to fix it. Take a look here!

I would LOVE to have something like this. The individual plug reports showing usage and cost per day and per month along with the current-moment power consumption (allowing for realtime tweaking) is amazing and very eye opening. A consolidated view would be perfect. I have four plugs still to deploy around the house.

  7. I've slowly been adding energy consumption monitoring to my Home Assistant setup and while I have a couple of things to go (kitchen fridge, dryer with very inaccessible power point, dishwasher) I think I’m getting a handle on where most of our energy is consumed.

Home networking infrastructure - Starlink power brick, router, DNS server, Fingbox, HA Green, Tapo hub - and my personal computing - MacBook Pro, Thunderbolt Display (still going 13+ years later), and printer - are the biggest grouped consumers. Everything else uses small amounts across each day. When heating and cooling are on, they make a clear difference.

I'm mostly using Tapo P110M plugs as monitors as I don't have the time or space in the wall to put something like Shelly kit - the wiring in this place is best described as “interesting”. Where things like the AC units have their own measurements, I'm using those.

The untracked consumption is interesting. I *think* it's mostly our heat pump hot water kicking off in the morning each day. I'm going to have to dig out the manual and see if I can understand what it’s doing.

  13. Is it really possible to have *too much* energy consumption monitoring in your home? No, it is not.

  15. 🔌 I put together this little cable using a Shelly PM Mini Gen 3 to generate power profiles for some of my devices that PowerCalc doesn’t yet support ⚡

Curious to see how this works and excited to contribute back to this awesome integration!

  16. Does anyone have any recommendations for monitoring power usage of appliances like fridges or hot water tanks? Specifically something compatible with home assistant? I have whole home consumption and want to understand the random usage spikes I get. #HomeAssistant #SelfHosted #EnergyMonitoring

  17. Anyone have any experience with Brultech GreenEye Monitor? Opinions wanted!

I'm looking to use it for whole house energy monitoring in our new build. Data will be ingested locally, probably via Home Assistant. As best I can tell, 32 channels is enough for our use case. This seems to be the gold standard in terms of quality and local data access.

  19. If you're the kind of person who would like to be able to monitor electricity consumption in your home (or business), I can highly recommend the eGauge devices from eGauge Systems [1].

In addition to being multi-channel data capturing devices, they also store the data (*for up to 10 years*) and have a nice web interface and XML/REST APIs.

While they are not inexpensive devices, they are also 100% local: no subscription fees, no cloud services (although the manufacturer does offer a reverse proxy for remote access if you want to use it), and the technical support is excellent.

I've recently upgraded from a set of Shelly 3EMs to two eGauge units (one in the house, one in the garage), which are monitoring many more circuits. The eGauge is able to do aggregations and integrations of the raw sensor data directly on the device, and store those values, so there is no risk of losing data when there is a network disruption. I'll be building an importer to extract data via the API and import into InfluxDB, but I'm quite happy to not have to worry about data loss if the InfluxDB server is unavailable or the importer tool is broken.

The pictured unit, in our house, is measuring whole-house consumption, PV solar generation, and consumption by various devices (IT rack, water heater, electric oven, floor heat, refrigerator, etc.) The unit in our garage is measuring consumption by our heat pumps.

I'm not being compensated for this post and have no relationship with the company other than being a satisfied customer.

  22. Blue line (the upper one) = gas usage for that day
Pink line (the lower one) = max outside temperature for that day

Temp goes down, gas usage goes up!
