New York Times: Data Centers to Add Billions in Power Costs in 13 States. This link goes to a gift article. “PJM, the nation’s largest electrical grid operator, on Tuesday released results of an electricity auction that would add $6.3 billion in costs to the bills of millions of households and businesses within the next three years, an increase driven by the power demands of data centers.”

Across the US, calls to halt data center construction have multiplied, as Americans grow increasingly concerned about risks of pollution, rising energy costs, and diminishing water supplies. At the federal level, Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) have introduced legislation seeking a possible nationwide construction ban. But Republicans are seemingly unlikely to embrace that legislation, given Donald Trump’s claim that such moratoriums would threaten America’s lead in the AI race.

Europe’s lifelines are too old.
Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Europeans have paid more for their electricity – except in Spain.
The average Spanish household has actually saved around €10 per month since the start of the war on Iran. Thanks to the country’s commitment to renewable energy.
To replicate Spain’s success across Europe, massive upgrades are needed. And all stands and falls with our grids.

So, given the attack on #SamAltman's house (and how gun-ho many workplaces are for employees to join the #AICult), I expect that anyone #ResistingAI will be next ones to be branded as #Terrorists.
#PauseAI and #StopAI: Meet the #AntiAI groups facing questions after the attack on Sam Altman
By Sharon Goldman
April 15, 2026Excerpt: "The attempted firebombing of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s San Francisco home last Friday, allegedly carried out by 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, has drawn attention to two anti-AI groups with similar names: Pause AI and Stop AI. Both have condemned the violence and said the suspect is not and was never a member of their organizations.
"Still, the incident, in which Moreno-Gama also went to #OpenAI’s headquarters and tried to shatter the building’s glass doors with a chair and threatened to burn the facility, surfaced his activity on Pause AI’s Discord server and renewed scrutiny of Stop AI’s direct actions targeting OpenAI last year."

#AI #DataCenter #Resistance: #Maine Passes Nation’s First Statewide Moratorium — Will Gov. Mills Sign It?
#DemocracyNow, April 22, 2026
"Communities across the United States are pushing back against resource-draining data centers being built to fuel artificial intelligence and crypto ventures. In Maine, state legislators recently passed a first-in-the-country statewide moratorium on large data centers. 'Maine residents are concerned about the impacts of data centers on both their electric rates and other utility rates, as well as on our wonderful environment,' says Democratic state Representative Melanie Sachs, who sponsored the bill designed to give legislators time to develop regulations around new data center construction. Sachs says developers have been operating in 'complete secrecy' refusing to engage with community stakeholders, while their plans appear to provide 'limited economic opportunity with very few local jobs.' The bill goes to Maine Governor #JanetMills’s desk next."

'#DataColonialism': Native Communities Fight #AI #DataCenters on #IndigenousLand
#DemocracyNow, April 22, 2026
"The artificial intelligence industry’s #DataCenter boom is the latest chapter in a long history of #EnvironmentalRacism and resource exploitation in vulnerable Native communities, says Oglala Lakota and Northern Cheyenne activist #KrystalTwoBulls, the executive director of #HonorTheEarth, an Indigenous-led #EnvironmentalJustice organization that is tracking over 100 proposed data center projects on tribal and rural lands. We speak to Two Bulls about the myriad impacts of what she calls a 'modern-day iteration' of '#SettlerColonialism,' including #NoisePollution, #cancers and respiratory illnesses, water depletion, #EnergyGrid overload and even '#EcologicalCollapse.' As tech companies set their sights on Indigenous lands, Two Bulls says, 'We’re always the one that ends up having to sacrifice our relationship to land, air, water, our communities and our nonhuman relatives.' "A cyberattack that targeted power plants and other energy producers in Poland at the end of December used malware known as a “wiper” that was intended to erase computers and in an operation that was intended to cause a power outage and other disruption to services, says European security firm ESET, which obtained a copy of the malware used in the attack.
Wipers are designed to delete or overwrite critical files on a computer in order to render them inoperable. They have been used extensively by Russia against targets in Ukraine before and during its current war with that country.
Robert Lipovsky, principal threat intelligence researcher for the Slovakian firm, whose team has examined the malware – which they're calling DynoWiper – says the operation is “unprecedented” in Poland, since past cyberattacks targeting that country were not disruptive in nature or intent.
“Pulling off a disruptive cyberattack against the Polish energy sector is a big deal,” he told Zero Day.
Although the attack was thwarted, Polish authorities have stated that if successful it could have taken out power to 500,000 people in Poland. Polish officials haven't revealed how the hackers pulled off the attack or how officials determined the intent was to be disruptive or destructive, but the use of a wiper supports a conclusion that this was the intent of the attack.
Officials there have attributed the attack to Russia, and Lipovsky says his team concurs."

Countries are struggling to meet the rising energy demands of data centers
#Mexico’s lagging energy grid is forcing companies, including #Microsoft, to use generators.
By Daniela Dib and Pablo Jiménez Arandia, 15 September 2025
Excerpt: "That Mexico’s electric grid is struggling does not bode well for a country trying to position itself as a data center hub, and which is already home to 150 #DataCenters, including from Microsoft, #AmazonWebServices, and #Google. Together, they have invested over $7 billion in the country since 2020.
"Like Mexico, countries around the world are scrambling to meet the rising energy demands of data centers, spurred by a boom in #ArtificialIntelligence and #CloudComputing. Like Microsoft, some companies have tapped alternative — and sometimes more #polluting — energy sources. Mexico’s power grid faces a deficit of 48,000 megawatt-hours by 2030, which is more than half the country’s output in 2023, according to the Mexican Institute For Competitiveness, a research center. As the country lures more data center-related investments, more companies may follow in Microsoft’s footsteps.
" 'This case is part of a broader global pattern, particularly in areas where the rapid deployment of #DigitalInfrastructure is outpacing the #EnergyGrid’s capacity,' Marina Otero Verzier, a visiting professor at Columbia University who researches data centers, told Rest of World. 'In some cases, corporations frame fossil-fueled generators as temporary solutions, which, over time, become normalized.'
"Microsoft set up its data center last year in #ColónMexico, an industrial hub with a population of over 67,000 people, but was unable to plug into the country’s energy grid, which is itself largely powered by #FossilFuels. In documents filed to Mexico’s environmental secretariat in 2023, Microsoft said the grid would not be fully operative to the company until mid-2027 due to 'long construction times required in [Microsoft’s] contract with CFE,' referring to the Federal Electricity Commission. The following year, the secretariat approved Microsoft’s request to use seven generators to temporarily power its data center.
"A spokesperson for Microsoft declined to comment on how the company is powering its data centers in Mexico now, and whether it will continue using generators.
"Worldwide, nearly 60% of the electricity used by data centers comes from fossil fuels including #NaturalGas. #Renewables including #solar and #wind meet more than a quarter of the demand, according to the International Energy Agency. But while the share of renewable energy is increasing, the rapid growth in the demand for data centers is outpacing the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure, posing a challenge to the climate goals of countries and tech companies alike."
