One of my favorites on this theme is "Enemy Mine" (novella) by Barry Longyear. It won the Nebula & the Hugo, and was made into a fabulous film with Louis Gossett Jr. as the alien.

Picked up _Mirror Dance_, the next book in #LoisMcMasterBujold’s #VorkosiganSaga, as my next read and couldn’t help but think that the cover art looked _awfully_ familiar….

Side note: If you haven’t read the original #EnemyMine novella by #BarryBLongyear, I _highly_ recommend it, particularly as included in the _The Enemy Papers_ omnibus edition (https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/46a54995-4aa5-4960-adf3-312fb95cb624), which expands the original novella to novel length and includes two sequels, plus shorter pieces exploring the Dracula culture and religion. An excellent dive into an alien culture.

In honor of the passing of Lou Gossett Jr (RIP), gonna watch some Enemy Mine on #VHS. This is another one that my brothers and I watched ad infinitum on cable when we were kids. Let's see how it holds up, shall we?

Listening to the Movie Oubliette podcast episode on Enemy Mine, it occurs to me that the Dracs could be read as an analogue for Jews, and Davidge and the expansionist humans as an analogue for anti-Semites. I remember really loving this movie as a youngster, and I still think it was very progressive for 1980s Hollywood. But rewatching it as an adult, I have to admit it hasn't aged well.

I'm just rewatching Enemy Mine (1985). Like many pre-digital sci-fi films, its fantastic practical FX include a space battle and a few giants creatures for the protagonists to fend off. But what makes this film great is the concept, taken from a novella by Barry B. Longyear, and the performances by the two leads. Dennis Quaid as the rough-as-guts human fighter pilot Davidge, and Louis Gosset Jr. as the non-binary Drac he nicknames "Jerry".
