Wendy and I tried to rewatch #QueenOfTears, but the villains were just way too much to watch again.
Rewatching is quite delightful, but there are quite a lot of new and never-watched shows to occupy time.

Day 6, A drama you dropped. There were several. Most recently, The Manipulated with 2 of my favourite stars: #JiChangWook and #DohKyungsoo. The early part of the drama was pretty interesting, but when it shifted into sheer, unadulterated evil, I came to a hard stop.

#Day22 A 2024 Drama that deserves the hype
A 2018 drama that I watched in 2024 and gave a 10 to was #MyMister.
We watched in honour of #LeeSunKyun following his death by suicide. His acting, and that of #IU were stunning, as was the story, the direction, the cinematography, and the OST.
It's a bleak story and show for the most part but illustrates magnificently the power of having a single person who believes in you.

Day 13: Drama I found boring.

There were definitely several that fizzled out after the 1/2way point but the one that was horrid from the start was #SweetHome season 2!! I only kept at it because I watched it with @whoosh and apparently, misery loves company! There were only 8 shows and they were the longest shows I've watched. I just kept it on as background noise in the final half, in case 1 of the 3 interesting characters showed up.

I think that the female actor that I discovered and enjoyed the most in 2024 is probably Jeon Mi Do, who I greatly enjoyed in Thirty-Nine, as well as all of the seasons of Hospital Playlist. I've also enjoyed seeing her interact with her male costars in a couple of "reality" type shows. She portrays a natural calm and amusement that I enjoy watching.

Day 31: Favourite drama of 2023?

Limiting it to 2023 dramas that I saw, I will pick "Destined with You."

I love the high contrast of physical comedy with serial killers - when it's done well. I love trying to figure out the mystery - even if I have to suffer while waiting for the past lives to be revealed. I loved the symbolism & the cinematography.

But probably the thing that made it the best for me was viewing it via a watchparty with new kDrama friends from Mastodon (Fediverse) that I made this year. They caught things I didn't, gave me different perspectives, & made me LOL a lot. The joint viewing was the icing on the cake that made this drama my favourite of the 2023 dramas I saw.

(Since it's my first full year being a kDrama fan - it's easy to say it's the best)

What's great about kDrama?

1) kDrama has been shown to be good for depression

2) A great kDrama (& other Asian drama) community in the Fediverse (Mastodon)

3) Great art leads to more great art - dramas/film led to music

4) Learned to cook some Korean dishes

5) Started learning the Korean language

Day 28: Something you want to see in more dramas?

Getting up there in age makes me want to see more older characters dealing with what life has thrown at them, in relationships, friendships, work & career, those moments that make you stop & evaluate where you've been & where you're going & whether it's worth it.

In some dramas, the side characters sometimes deal with one or two of these things. But life hits hard later & it would be interesting to see the kDrama world address that.

But, of course!
I started out the year as a person who had avoided all TV for 14 years. I was quite happy with thatI had no cable or streaming. However, several folks here on Mastodon made reference to K-drama and in April of this year, I saw an invite to a weekly #watchparty. I enjoyed watching with a group. By early July, I had 2 streaming services, started bingeing, and learning 한글. Obsessed now.

Kids. The desire to start a family. I saw this in #FlowerOfEvil only. Usually kids are a dramatic background for single parents or they're abandoned and adopted by someone.

Actually #BattleForHappiness has a lot of families, however they aren't normal families with loving parents. They are more like dysfunctional ones.

I'd like to recommend #NotOthers (#남남 )

The focus is about mother-and-daughter relationship, stronger than the conflicts both leads may face.
There's a bit of romance and crime/mystery solving too.
Both lead actresses are great at impersonating a strong woman character.

Day 26: Most disappointing drama of 2023?

The worst disappointment this year was "Heartbeat." Ok Taec Yeon is a fabulous actor & the story started so well, but the last 1/2 was just a mess. Unfortunately, I watched this while airing, so I sat through the whole thing just hoping it would redeem itself.

I would have also said "Strong Girl Namsoon" but I expected it to be bad from the start, so wasn't too disappointed.

#day26 most disappointing drama of 2023

Typically if a drama is disappointing I quit watching it and this happens quite often.
Otherwise it's just being disappointed by the end. The more I like a drama, the more I get affected by a bad ending.

#HotelDelLuna got extremely boring in last episodes. And the culprit's behavior in #MyLovelyLiar does not make any sense.
#NowWeAreBreakingUp leaves a bitter aftertaste because culturally I can't understand it.

Day 25: Favorite romance of 2023?

If I knew the ending, I might pick "My Demon" because the chemistry there is outstanding. But I'm not sure how it will end.

I know I'm in the minority with this, but of the 2023 dramas I watched, "Destined with You" was my favorite romance. Loved watching him slowly fall and seeing her love grow.

"Perfect Marriage Revenge" does get an honorable mention.

Day 24: Favorite costumes of 2023?

I'm not a fan of the super oversized look, so I was thrilled to see the costumes in "My Demon" - the design, the colors & the coordination between the characters is gorgeous. I still can't believe pink checks can be a power suit - but they made it look great.

Honorable mention goes to "The Story of Park's Marriage Contract" because the current hanbok fashions with that beautiful embroidery are just amazing.

Also to "The Matchmakers" - love Rowoon's pinks & lilac, super long-sleeved silk robes & the FLs colorful hanboks are stunning.

Again not surprisingly I'm choosing my favorite drama, which is not from 2023, however as far as romance goes it's unbeatable.

The chemistry, the whole love story, the romance developing even if they couldn't talk or see each others... love without needing words or even social conventions.

#day23 Longest drama I completed in 2023

I haven't yet completed #LiveYourOwnLife , since it's currently airing, but with a total of 50 1h-episodes and 25 already aired, it's the longest #kdrama on my watchlist.

It's what typically comes to mind with the word "drama" . Stereotypical and caricatured characters, selfish mothers and absent fathers, a lot of shouting, invasive families, etc. It's not that bad though, I kind of like it.

Not a 2023 drama, but I watched "Her Private Life" in January.

At that point I had only been watching dramas for a few months. I honestly initially thought, "an adult fangirl?!?!"

But not only did the drama become one of my favorites (I love Park Min Young) but I appreciated the affirmation that it's ok to fangirl at any age!

#day21 A drama that was better than expected

I have all sorts of prejudices based on titles. As for #Happiness I was expecting some low-grade horror show with romance being the main aspect of the plot. I couldn't have been more wrong!

It's what I wanted and even more. It's a psychological/horror thriller, there's a power struggle, just the right amount of romance, intriguing characters and a captivating plot.

#MayIHelpYou made me cry and laugh too. It's the story of a young woman ( #LeeHyeRi ) taking up the controversial job of funeral director, only to find out that she can communicate with the dead and grant them their final wish.

The ML is guy who runs all sort of legal errands.

Certain stories behind the corpses are so sad it's impossible not to be moved.

He won a best actor award for his role in "Our Blooming Youth" this year.

He plays chaebols & royalty wonderfully, but he also plays genius lawyers & poor family's tofu maker son so well. He can be funny & he can tear your heart out. He does action, singing, & dancing.

This year I've rewatched "Happiness" & now "Hwarang" where he played the lead roles. He is amazing in historicals where he has to ride horses & do other stunts.

On many sets they also call him "Vitamin P" because he is so positive & supportive of crew & cast mates.

I'm really looking forward to "Dr. Slump" next year.

#day19 A drama that made me laugh

I've already mentioned this, but from the very first opening scene (the food-sharing cycle) to the last episode ("who did you give the chocolate to?") #Reply1988 is the funniest Korean drama I watched.

And #LeeHyeRi has a range of facial expressions making me roll on the floor. She's truly an amazing actress!

There's too many of them. For the sake of flaming things up a little bit (I have a provocative personality 😈) I'll express an unpopular opinion.

I quit #SomethingInTheRain halfway through.
It was hard not to fall asleep while watching it. Too cheesy, nothing is really going on besides an absolutely trivial and cheesy romance.
The only thing I enjoyed is the OST. A great selection of songs.

#day12 A platonic relationship I loved

It's not among my favorite #dramas, the whole rich guy poor girl storyline is not for me. However I had to watch at least one of the #BoysOverFlowers remake, mainly because of its popularity in Asia, and the #thaidrama was the only one I could watch.

What I did absolutely love is the platonic relationship between #Gorya and #Ren, the latter marvelously interpreted by #JirawatSutivanichsak
