  1. Here is an announcement about the new grief support group I'll be leading for #HFC. The 1st meeting is on 3.19 at 2 pm ET, 11 am PT. Click enroll & sign up if you want to talk about your grief or listen to others share theirs. My experience comes from my father's early-onset #Alzheimer's. He was diagnosed in his mid 50s & died 15 years later. Looking back, he was sick well before then (the #prodromal phase). How I wish I knew then what I know now. I'll share this & more.

  5. How sad how this resonates. Looking back and realizing your loved one's disease was in the #prodromal phase. My father's early-onset #Alzheimer's began with hearing loss, too.

"As Bruce declines, his family is realizing that the signs were there earlier than they realized. “Something was wrong for a long time,” Tallulah admitted last year. “It started out with a kind of vague unresponsiveness, which the family chalked up to Hollywood hearing loss."

  9. What is known as the #prodromal phase, the years when #Alzheimer's is attacking the brain but the clinical presentations may not yet be apparent. "One early hallmark is that sticky protein called beta-amyloid, which over time builds up into brain-clogging #plaques. #Amyloid alone isn’t enough to damage memory — plenty of healthy people’s brains harbor a lot of plaque. An abnormal #tau protein that forms neuron-killing tangles is one of several co-conspirators."

  13. Please consider buying #FindingtheRightWords: A Story of Literature, Grief, and the Brain, published by #jhupress while it's being discounted. The #memoir is about my father's early-onset #Alzheimer's, which I wrote with #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller. Readers have said it captures the complexities of #grief that often accompany #dementia, & the #neurology behind the many diseases (#FTD, #CTE, et al.) comprising #dementia. #EndAlz, #medhums, #litstudies, #narrativemedicine weinsteinandmiller.com

  15. #Dr.BruceMiller of #UCSF with words of wisdom about #dementia. Like difficulties with sleep and hearing, mood changes, such as #depression, can be a #prodromal indicator of a #brain struggling with# dementia. 19. "The book’s clear portrayal of the manifestations of a relatively poorly known form of Alzheimer’s disease, its documentation of the established certainties of the disease, and its definition of the boundaries of the different forms of dementia, are equally helpful for lay people, general doctors, and neurologists. The book’s free-flowing and unrestrained narrative, and its human angle chronicle, are refreshing, and I recommend it to all doctors."#medhums #EndAlz thedoctorsbookshelf.com/2023/0

  20. March 6-11 is #CreativeBrainWeek at #TrinityCollegeDublin. I am so honored to be a part of this event with friends and colleagues. On the 8th, I'll be presenting on the "Imagination," and specifically how my love, most importantly for my father, and of #literature, too, helped me write, with #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller, Finding the Right Words. #medhums, @litstudies #EndAlz

  21. I wrote Finding the Right Words with #neurologist Dr. Bruce Miller hoping that telling my father's story of #early-onset #Alzheimer's Disease would help others. Thank you #Adolfo Garcia for these amazingly generous words. 💜 #medhums, #EndAlz

  22. I'm honored to be talking this Friday about #caregiving, #grief, #dementia, and #FindingtheRightWords at the #Canterbury Senior Residence in #PalosVerdes. This book with #Dr.BruceMiller of #UCSF has many audiences, and we had all of them in mind as we wrote it. Those with #dementia and #caregivers are among the most important (#doctors and #litstudies people, #medhums, too), but we especially hope to reach the ones loving and caring everyday for people with dementia. #EndAlz
