"Computer Weekly reveals for the first time how French cyber spies hacked EncroChat phones, used by organised crime groups, in 2020. In the first of two major articles, we describe how a Czech spyware company rehacked the French hack and found that French malware – described as a national security secret – had been copied from popular code-sharing platform GitHub.
The Czech rehack uncovered digital fingerprints matching French evidence sent across Europe, proving how messages had been copied.
The exposure of the French method, British lawyers say, is likely to restart a critical case into the legality of police tactics in EncroChat in Britain’s Investigatory Powers Tribunal, which has been adjourned for more than two years, awaiting a finding on how the hack was carried out.
The secret French state hacking group that broke into tens of thousands of encrypted secure phones in Europe used an Android exploit first spotted in 2017, CW can reveal. For two years, a fatal security vulnerability, known as the Bad Binder bug, was left unpatched inside 2.5 billion phones, leaving users at maximum risk. The exploit allowed cyber spies to take complete control of infected phones and copy or change users’ data, programs and files at will."

This is a *lot* of prison (12 years for the lad, he will serve 6-9 of them inside) for just #partydrugs with no violence involved, but there was a lot being sold!
Digging a bit deeper it appears he *tried* to get out of the game after #Encrochat got popped, laundered the money into an events management company but it folded (even ending up with an Employment Tribunal judgment as he didn't pay his staff correctly), then got back into dealing and thus created a second set of data for #MetPol to track and nick him!

Law enforcement … believe almost one third of Europe’s cocaine is now routed through West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, and they expect that to rise to half by 2030.

I don't understand why the chap got himself mixed up in all this in early middle age - both his garages seem to be doing fairly well (they have since been handed over to some other owner, he's now in #Barlinnie and quite likely to spend a few years more there)

I spent several years as an expert #EncroChat witness in trials of very serious organised crime gangs (I had photos of an assassinated individual slumped in the street to examine a few years back, alongside bricks of cocaine and various guns). I think this is an entirely apt comparison #Clegg

Just stop the BS. EncroChat was specifically built and marketed for criminals. It wasn't shut down by law enforcement, it was hacked by the French police, after which they decided to shut the service down themselves.
Signal is open source (and the issue regarding reproducible builds is known, but it doesn't impact the security of the app. It is caused by a navigation library that causes some race condition during the build process, the result of which is dependent on CPU speed. They are aware of the issue, and are working to fix it. It is tracked here: https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues/13565). If you don't trust the official build, you can compile it yourself. There are also forks like Signal-FOSS or @mollyim available if you prefer that.
The server is also open source (of course you can't verify if they are actually running that code, but that's gonna be the case for every application with a client/server architecture. Your point regarding Signal being "proprietary SaaS" is, again, total BS.

@CCC Das wird dem Wüst aber nix nützen, denn sie können nix anfangen, mit den Daten. Der einzige Grund für den Irrsinn ist, dass die Polizei zu langsam ist. Das ist sie, weil sie im Verfahrensirrsinn gefangen ist. (zertifiziert in 3facher Ausfertigung).
Anstatt positive Lehren aus #Encrochat zu ziehen, kommen die Herren Ahnungslos mit der Überwachungsgiesskanne, die ihnen von irgendwelchen Appartschiks eingeflüstert werden.
Das Risiko für Demokratie wird erhöht ohne wirklichen Gegenwert.

Zwar endlich eine Entscheidung vom #Bundesverfassungsgericht in Sachen #Encrochat, aber leider nicht im Sinne digitaler #Bürgerrechte. Juristisch sind die getätigten Ausführungen zur #Datenverwertbarkeit zwar nachvollziehbar, aber die mindestens genauso relevanten Fragen von #Datenauthentizität und #Datenintegrität ermittlungsrelevanter Datensätze aus dem Ausland und der zukünftige Umgang mit derlei sich häufenden Verfahren wurden nicht wirklich thematisiert:
