Have been hacking at #rocknix last week or so. Implemented a few bits mainly cleaning up the networking code but likewise have implemented comprehensive memory-management subsystem and tonight did the integration bits to expose it natively through #emulationstation #RetroGaming #handheld #linux

My #RetroPi stopped working (haven't tried it for some time) after update to #bookworm...

I figured #EmulationStation does need some recompiling, for the new libraries...

Poor #RaspberryPi 4, has been going for 2 hours now...😅

#Android #emulators can probably handle all the games, but I dislike the user experience of fiddling with all the different emulators, and their different settings, or faffing with launchers and front ends trying to locate all the right directories. I prefer an #emulationStation or #RetroArch frontend that just boots to a list of games. I'm sick of configuring inputs for every system I want to play. A handheld should be pick up and play.

I feel seen.

To explain a bit, #EmulationStation supports themes, and this one features noir/dark/or, hey, horror-themed images of the game systems it can emulate. They obviously did it just for me!

Télécharger Emulation Station et RetroArch, chercher pourquoi l'AppImage de ES s'ouvre pas dans Gearlever, trouver que la dernière version de Gearlever est cassée, chercher comment downgrader un flatpak, lancer ES, comprendre pourquoi il y a un message d'erreur au lancement du jeu, télécharger le cœur de l'emulateur qu'on veut dans RetroArch, configurer RetroArch pour qu'il se lance en plein écran avec une mise à l'échelle correcte, ajouter ES à Steam, comprendre pourquoi maintenant il se lance plus, chercher les logs, trouver le message d'erreur, Steam est installé en flatpak et on peut pas lancer d'AppImage dans un flatpak, laisser tomber l'ajout dans Steam, lancer ES depuis le menu démarrer, ça marche.

– C'est bizarre, elles sont un peu longues tes 5 minutes.

I fucked around in the #RetroArch settings and started scanning the SD card but it only partially finished. It did manage to find some #Roms and I got it to play #CrazyTaxi 2. #EmulationStation still doesn't see any games though, so I think that may be the wrong way to do it.

I downloaded the #RockNix image for my #RGArc, and flashed it to an SD Card with Balena Etcher. It boots right up! I managed to setup the WiFi and pull down the latest update too, so it's already functioning better than the stock #Anbernic OS!

It can't find any of the #Roms, even on the stock SD card, but it wouldn't be #Linux if there wasn't something to fix!

#EmuDeck is pretty damn cool and runs very well. I’ve got this neat theme running in #EmulationStation.

I’ve decided to download all of the #Zelda games, except for BotW and TotK as I haven’t got the means to set up Switch emulation. Never saw them as my kind of games, but as I’ve never played any of them I thought I’d give them a go.

I couldn't be more dissatisfied with the catalogue of #knulli #themes for the #rg35xxh. All of them try to cramp so much information into the screen, and they end up feeling bloated. To be blunt, they all suck.

After weeks of searching, I was able to find this theme called "es-theme-tiled" made by Claudio Filipe. It's surprisingly customizable. The menus are just image grids. The system view shows modern-looking system logos, and the game view shows the box arts. It felt great, but still not good enough for me, so I'm removing useless texts and images and tweaking it to my liking.

And it feels so good! Now I really feel like I can enjoy this UI!

Uuuuund die Sammlung wächst weiter … Hier im Bild noch die Original Firmware zu sehen, ich habe aber mittlerweile #Knulli drauf gemacht (in Ermangelung von #OnionOS für diese Plattform). Auf meinem – systemgleichen – RG35xx+ habe ich auch Knulli drauf. Gefällt ganz gut, ist aktuell mein Favorit. Vor allem auch wegen #EmulationStation als Frontend. 👍 #anbernic #rg35xxh #retrogaming

I created a #python script to generate a custom #emulationstation collection of all 5-star #retrogaming games present on #steamdeck. this is a great way to have the best games easily at hand, especially when using large collections.

how to do it?

1. copy the script from https://pastebin.com/rjam3wYp and name it create.py
2. run it on your steamdeck by running 'python create.py'
3. start emulationstation, enable custom collections and voila! all the best games now show in a single list!

I love how the #SteamDeck still hasn't figured out how to properly exit from non-#Steam apps yet, particularly desktop apps (including its very neat #NestedDesktop app).

This used to bug me so much, but I've sort of accepted it by opting for web apps instead of desktop apps in #Gaming mode - these apps can safely/properly be closed by "closing the tab" (from the browser) by pressing Ctrl + W. Using the Web Browser controller layout, the left "Select" button on the controller is a shortcut for this combination.

Games or any other game-like apps such as #EmulationStation are fine, as they have an in-game/app "quit" option to close the app properly. Desktop apps though, mostly do not have this option - leaving you only with the option to "Exit Game" through #SteamOS instead where the issue lies, and something that hasn't been fixed since the Deck was launched.

Hmmm, considering fetching me a #SteamDeck for my #PC #gaming needs. Maybe with beefed up storage and #emulationstation ...

Not going to be able to get that Apple IIe unfortunately. My next "retro" project will instead be something I've been meaning to do for a while - buy a thin client for cheap (under $50) and install emulation station on it. Bonus is that I'll also use it for my streaming services.

Can anyone experienced with #Batocera and #emulationstation help me solve an issue? Controls are being redefined every time Emulation Station is reloaded or the system starts.

I'm configuring an #arcade stick for 2 players, connected via USB. I map the buttons, but every time ES reloads, the mapping gets reverted to a weird default and the assignments for which controls are for P1 and P2 change.

This is Batocera 5.25 for Atom. Can't update as newer versions have issues with onboard graphics.

Last weekend, I set up my #linux dual #EmulationStation and #MediaCenter using #Kodi and #RetroArch on #ArchLinux. Everything completely without a #WindowManager. No #Wayland and no #X11 either! I just used #systemd scripts to switch between the two applications, which can both talk directly to the #GPU!

Is anyone interested in a blog post about the details?
