In a Setback for Trump, Judge Says N.Y. #WindFarm Can Resume Construction
A federal judge said the #EmpireWind project off #LongIsland would suffer “irreparable harm” if the Trump administration continued to hold up work.
It was the second time this week that a judge has thwarted the Trump administration’s effort to stop the five #offshorewind projects being built by different companies along the east coast.

#OffshoreWind Projects Challenge Trump Administration’s Order to Stop Work
The developers of #RevolutionWind off #RhodeIsland and #EmpireWind off #NewYork are the latest to sue the Trump administration. The Interior Department on Dec. 22 ordered companies to halt work on five #windfarms in various stages of construction along the East Coast.

#Equinor, the developer behind #EmpireWind, recently said that those delays & other regulatory changes affecting US offshore #wind projects had cost the company nearly $1B.
At the same time as it thwarts the wind industry, the #Trump admin has taken several steps to boost #oil & #gas as well as #coal, the dirtiest & most expensive #FossilFuel when it comes to burning it for #electricity.

In April, the #Trump admin ordered a halt to work at #EmpireWind, a $5B #WindFarm off the coast of #LongIsland that was already under construction, without publicly providing a justification. After a month of negotiations with #NY Gov #KathyHochul, the admin let Empire Wind move forward, but admin ofcls suggested that they had done so only after Hochul agreed to approve new #gas #pipelines in the state. Hochul has denied that any such deal was made.

#EmpireWind is a large project being built off #LongIsland by #Equinor, Norwegian energy company. The first of two phases, Empire Wind 1, will have an 800MW capacity and has already received permitting and environmental approval. #BOEM indicates a review of its approval is ongoing, but construction can resume during the review

#US #Interior secretary orders #offshorewind project shut down
The order from US Secretary of the Interior #DougBurgum, who alleged that the project was rushed through review. But #Burgum's move comes the same week a report from the Government Accountability Office, done in response to the executive order, found only minor issues with the existing permitting process.
The #Equnior project, termed #EmpireWind, is a key part of #NewYork's plans to meet its #climate goals.

Here's even more #Trump #idiocracy, in that the #federal government of the #US has put a stop to a project that #Equinor already has sunk $1.5bn into - meaning the US government just kicked the beehive of the giant #SovreignWealthFund of #Norway.
This is tantamount to robbing someone and then spitting in their face. Equinor is considering what legal route they can take.
