Très joli film, avec toujours le sens de la mise en scène de Sam Mendes et des acteurs justes.
Une petite imprécision sur la santé mentale du personnage d'Hilary mais possible que ça soit volontaire au regard de l'époque où se déroule l'histoire -
Empire of Light - Come on general audience, why all the hate on this movie?! I liked it. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent a week in Margate during the first lockdown summer and the way I remember those locations with lockdown effect. Believe me, the town is almost the same it was in 1981.

#EmpireOfLight is much better than its score on #RottenTomatoes.
It's a small, human story beautifully shot by #RogerDeakins and scored by #TrentReznor and #AtticusRoss that has a bit of #CinemaParadiso to it.
More than just a love story between an middle-aged white woman and a young Black man, it's about real human connection, respect, caring, and abiding affection where it doesn't seem that should happen or be possible.
It's not a great movie, but it is beautiful, warm, and comforting.

The low review score surprised me, so I skimmed #RottenTomatoes and most criticisms seemed plausible and reasonable.
Part of Tara Brady's is so far off it's clear she lives in white denial.
Even today, a huge percentage, if not still a majority, of white people refuse to acknowledge and accept the level of #racism that persists.

[molti lo chiamerebbero "metacinema" ma in realtà, IMHO, non lo è]
Speriamo che almeno il film di #Mendes sia presentabile nonostante la sua solita retorica visuale, e che sia più digeribile del pastrocchio senza capo né coda di #Chazelle (di cui salvo solo la parte finale, ma cmq un film fallimentare).

I saw #EmpireOfLight tonight and thought it was a beautiful, unexpected, tender film which looked stunning and managed to pack in a lot without feeling like being flung around from one story arc to the next. I’ve seen people compare it to Belfast which I really disliked and I think the difference is that this film managed to (whilst being a deeply personal story) be about something other than just the person making the film.

I saw #EmpireOfLight at #TheCastleCinema last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. A film with real heart, with beautiful performances from all. Highly recommended.

Off to #TheCastleCinema tonight to see #EmpireOfLight and maybe have a bite to eat. It's a lovely cinema with an excellent bar and friendly staff. What more could you want?

Review of #EmpireOfLight (2022) at #CampbeltownPictureHouse.
Superb film about a middle-aged woman (#OliviaColman) who works at a seaside cinema, holding together a spiritless 'normal' life with medication. This changes when a young Black man (#MichealWard) joins the staff. Their relationship is set against the backdrop of early 1980s racial violence.
The other main actor is the magnificent #ArtDeco cinema, with its own redemptive power.

Went to see #EmpireOfLight - strong recommend. Not always an easy watch but moving film with brilliant performances, especially Olivia Colman & Michael Ward. Special resonance for those of us who were teenagers in the early 1980s also.

Empire of Light is a dark film about dark themes. Mental health, depression, racism, loneliness, and urban decay. If that hasn't made you gallop to the cinema to see it, then I don't know what will!
Joking aside, there are some lighter moments in the connections made between characters. It's an okay, but ultimately forgettable film. 7/10. Which is my usual rating for films that are average.

Finally saw #thefabelmans the other night. I liked it for the most part but it didn't really capture me like I thought it might given the accolades I've heard about it. I don't think it showed the same heart for me or fostered the love of movies like I think #empireoflight did, though it was fun to watch some of the technology and techniques used in that time when he started making movies. 1/2
