Nueva York, 28 de julio de 1945.
La ciudad estaba cubierta por una niebla espesa y la visibilidad era pésima.
A las 9:49 de la mañana, un bombardero B-25 Mitchell de la Fuerza Aérea del Ejército de Estados Unidos sobrevolaba Manhattan.
El aparato había despegado de Bedford, Massachusetts, y se dirigía al aeropuerto LaGuardia, pero las condiciones meteorológicas complicaron el vuelo y los controladores terminaron desviándolo hacia Newark.
Al piloto, el teniente coronel William F. Smith Jr., le habían advertido de que el Empire State Building no era visible desde el aire debido a la niebla.Smith era un veterano de combate de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y llevaba a bordo a otras dos personas.
Volaba relativamente bajo buscando una zona con mejor visibilidad cuando apareció delante de él el perfil de un rascacielos.
Era el Chrysler Building.
Smith consiguió esquivarlo, pero la maniobra colocó al B-25 directamente en la trayectoria del Empire State Building.El avión chocó contra el lado norte del edificio, entre las plantas 78 y 80, a una velocidad aproximada de 200 millas por hora.
El impacto abrió un enorme agujero en la fachada y destrozó varias oficinas de la National Catholic Welfare Conference, donde aquel sábado trabajaban empleados preparando material de ayuda para soldados destinados en el extranjero.El combustible del avión se incendió inmediatamente.
Las llamas se extendieron por varias plantas y salieron por el enorme boquete abierto en el edificio.
Fragmentos del bombardero fueron lanzados por el impacto y uno de los motores atravesó completamente la estructura antes de caer al otro lado de la calle, donde terminó entrando en un ático que albergaba un estudio de arte.El otro motor cayó por un hueco de ascensor.
Y ahí ocurrió una de las historias más increíbles de aquel accidente.
Betty Lou Oliver, una joven de 19 años que trabajaba como operadora de ascensor, se encontraba en uno de los elevadores cuando el impacto cortó los cables.
El ascensor cayó desde aproximadamente el piso 75 hacia el sótano.Oliver sobrevivió.
Los cables que habían quedado amontonados en el fondo del hueco ayudaron a amortiguar la caída y el aire comprimido generado durante el descenso pudo haber contribuido también a reducir la violencia del impacto.
La joven sufrió graves lesiones, entre ellas fracturas en la espalda y el cuello, pero consiguió salir con vida.El incendio fue controlado en unos 40 minutos.
Para entonces, 14 personas habían muerto: los tres ocupantes del B-25 y once trabajadores que se encontraban dentro del Empire State Building.
Unas dos docenas de personas resultaron heridas.El agujero abierto en la fachada medía aproximadamente 18 por 20 pies, unos 5,5 por 6 metros.
El accidente provocó daños cercanos al millón de dólares de la época, una cantidad equivalente a más de diez millones de dólares actuales según estimaciones posteriores.Y, sin embargo, ocurrió algo que impresionó especialmente a ingenieros y arquitectos.
El Empire State Building seguía en pie.
La enorme masa del avión había golpeado una de las zonas más altas del edificio, había destruido oficinas, arrancado elementos de la fachada y provocado un incendio alimentado por combustible de aviación, pero la estructura principal de acero no sufrió daños que comprometieran la estabilidad del rascacielos.
El edificio incluso volvió a abrir para los negocios solo dos días después.
En las fotografías tomadas después del accidente se ve algo difícil de asimilar: donde unas horas antes había despachos y escritorios aparecen muebles destrozados, cristales rotos, restos metálicos y un enorme agujero abierto directamente sobre el perfil de Manhattan.
Y todo había ocurrido en cuestión de segundos.
El Empire State Building tenía entonces solo catorce años.
Había sido inaugurado en 1931 y seguía siendo el edificio más alto del mundo.
Para los neoyorquinos era mucho más que un rascacielos: se había convertido en uno de los símbolos de la ciudad.Aquel 28 de julio de 1945, un bombardero militar atravesó literalmente ese símbolo.
No fue un ataque.
No hubo una conspiración ni un enemigo detrás del accidente.
Fue una combinación de niebla, navegación complicada y una decisión tomada en cuestión de segundos.
La Segunda Guerra Mundial todavía no había terminado.
En Europa la guerra había concluido en mayo, pero Japón seguía combatiendo y Estados Unidos continuaba movilizado.
Un bombardero militar sobrevolando Nueva York no era algo completamente extraño.Lo que nadie esperaba era que terminara incrustado en el edificio más famoso de la ciudad.
El accidente también dejó una imagen que se convertiría en una de las fotografías más reconocibles de la historia del Empire State Building: los restos del B-25 sobresaliendo de la fachada, con el enorme agujero abierto entre los pisos superiores.
Pero quizá la imagen más difícil de olvidar sea la de lo que ocurrió después.
Bomberos subiendo por un edificio en llamas.
Trabajadores tratando de salir.
Restos del avión desperdigados por las plantas.
Un motor que había atravesado el edificio.
Y una joven atrapada dentro de un ascensor que acababa de caer desde 75 pisos.
Betty Lou Oliver sobrevivió.
El Empire State Building también.
El B-25 no.
Aquel sábado de julio de 1945, la ciudad perdió a catorce personas y uno de sus símbolos quedó marcado para siempre por una herida que todavía puede verse en las fotografías de aquel día.
Solo habían pasado unos segundos desde que el avión apareció entre la niebla hasta que chocó contra el edificio.
Pero aquellos segundos quedaron grabados en la historia de Nueva York.

"Two people were taken into police custody Wednesday afternoon after climbing to the top of #NewYorkCity’s famed Empire State Building, where they unfurled a peace banner and appeared to start making out nearly 1,500 feet above the city.
"The pair, a man and a woman in dark outfits and masks, displayed a flag that read: 'When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.'
"In one especially surreal moment, the man got down on one knee and appeared to propose to the woman. The two embraced and kissed as an NBC New York helicopter circled overhead.
"The two eventually made their way down to street level, where they were taken into custody by law enforcement, according to New York Police Department spokesperson Delaney Kempner.
"The climbers told police their names are #AngelinaNikolau and #IvanKuznetsov, according to law enforcement sources."
