  1. Guilt is Heavy: Some Secrets Never Like To Stay Buried

We all talk about fear. But only a few people talk about guilt.

Fear is sudden, while guilt loves to settle slowly. Guilt won’t scream, it will whisper. It stalks people into vacant rooms, sleep-deprived nights, normal talks, and peaceful moments. And with the passage of time, it never really disappears.

    Guilt Is Stronger Than Regret

Regret is a wish that something had happened differently. Guilt will compel you to believe that you are responsible.

That one difference changes everything. People carrying guilt keep prtending that their life is normal. They laugh when expected, show up to work, celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, and keep conversations lighter. But beneath that carefully constructed surface lives a memory they cannot erase.

Sometimes the crime gets obvious. Sometimes it is simply a choice that changed another person’s life forever. The human mind rarely distinguishes between the two.

    An Invisible Cage

Guilt creates a cage that nobody else can see. It shifts human behaviour in subtle ways.

When guilt sits with you, you tend to become unusually generous, trying to compensate for an invisible debt. Others on their guilt trip may detach from everyone dwelling in an illusion that they are not worthy of happiness. Some humans may become angry because they can no longer face themselves.

An invisible burden keeps growing until it becomes heavier than any other legal punishment.

    Guilt Makes Thrillers Compelling

I am a psychological thriller author who loves to binge-watch thrillers of all dimensions on OTT platforms. The thrillers I still remember aren’t the ones just finding the killer. They are the ones that unravel what humans try to hide.

And that thought invaded me throughout the time I was writing AN UNEXPECTED DETOUR or RED CAP RECKONING.

A guilty conscience creates conflict long before a detective arrives. Every unexpected text message feels alarming. Every knock on the door sounds like justice. Every stranger becomes a possible witness.

That psychological tension keeps readers gliding smoothly from one page to another. The real suspense in AN UNEXPECTED DETOUR isn’t who kidnapped the couple from their honeymoon suite. If you look at RED CAP RECKONING, the real mystery isn’t hidden in who is stalking the woman everywhere or who left the note for her in the cab.

    It’s something else.

    The Lies We Tell Ourselves

Before people lie to others, they lie to themselves.

    “I didn’t have a choice.”

    “It wasn’t my fault.“

    “They deserved it.”

“No one will ever find out.”

    These are survival mechanisms.

But truth resurfaces, sometimes through evidence, sometimes through memory, and sometimes through the unbearable weight of silence.

Why Does This Theme Fascinate Me as a Writer?

As a thriller author, perfect heroes or obvious villains don’t appeal much to me.

I’m in love with ordinary characters placed in extraordinary situations… people whose decisions haunt them long after the moment has passed. Sometimes after years.

What happens when guilt becomes more dangerous than the original crime?

How far will someone go to protect a secret?

And when does redemption become impossible?

These questions shaped many of the emotional layers while writing RED CAP RECKONING. Beneath the mystery and suspense lies something deeply human: the burden people carry when they believe the past can never truly be escaped.

Stories about guilt resonate so deeply with me. Everyone has replayed a decision they wish they could undo at some point in their lives. The weight differs, but the feeling remains the same.

Is that what makes makes psychological thrillers unforgettable?

Surprisingly the hardest person to escape is often ourselves.

Do you enjoy reading psychological suspense, moral dilemmas, hidden truths, and unforgettable twists? Both AN UNEXPECTED DETOUR and RED CAP RECKONING explore exactly how guilt can become the most relentless pursuer of all.

  5. Emotional trauma is an invisible wound that can be just as devastating as physical injuries. Picture an emergency room where medical professionals rush to treat visible wounds—cuts, broken bones, or other injuries that demand urgent attention. But emotional wounds?

  6. Book recommendation:
    Colors without color
    by my friend Anja Groller

The hedgehog Knut has days where he feels numb inside, can't feel anything, colors have no color and the sun doesn't radiate warmth.
Badger Kunibert wants to help his best friend get through those days, understand Knut better and wonders if it might be his fault somehow (it isn't).

The book helps kids understand loved ones that suffer from trauma sequelae.
A grownup should accompany the kid while reading the book.

"Farben ohne Farbe" is the German original title of the book, which I believe was translated in English, but might not have been released that way yet.

Anja is a social- and trauma pedagogue and trauma consultant and studies animal assisted intervention with me.
Her dog Balu is a therapy assistant dog.

I hope the book will help bring more empathy, love and understanding into this world. And color.

    My rating: Five hearts!

  7. I really wish it were easier for me to feel, connect, and express empathy. I blame emotional trauma for that. I'm barricaded inside these walls, and nobody will ever touch me again. I ache for them and their need for my feelings, attention, and support, which I can't give. #emotionaltrauma #emotionalabuse #empathy #empath #vulnerable #vulnerability #love #relationships #RelationshipsAndMentalHealth

  8. So. Much. This!
I have added the text, for this video, as best I could, in the alt text.
The video is a scene, shot through a sliding glass door. Outside, it is snowing, in the backyard. Some trees, an awning, a shed, and a small red wagon are visible.
