The good: Bonfire and #Emissary delivered interoperable prototypes at the end of June.

The bad: With this experience, we're still updating the protocol to account for some very specific encryption/delivery issues. So, we haven't launched #E2EE on our own servers.

So, Emissary's (my) messenger is actually live, and usable on Bandwagon.fm -- however, it's only trading *unencrypted* messages for now, until we lock down some protocol decisions.

#Emissary is currently undergoing its first colonoscopy - a full QA scan by a third-party QA company..

I've done these in the past with other software. They're always informative, always make the software better, and are always a tremendous pain in the ass to fix.

I'm excited to share my progress on the new "Conversations" app for #Emissary. If you've been watching the SWF end-to-end encrypted (#E2EE) messaging project this should look familiar.

But the Conversations app can also send regular, unencrypted "direct messages" too. Here's an exchange with a Mastodon server.

Wagoneers on #Bandwagon will be some of the first to try this out - though I'm probably not activating E2EE on Bandwagon.

I'm hoping this enables many new kinds of apps on Emissary.

I'm so excited for this next year on the #Fediverse.

And the more I learn, the more I think #BridgyFed is going to become a foundational part of our network.

As I understand it, Mastodon is building to the MLS in ActivityPub spec from the SWF - the same one #Bonfire and #Emissary are building to today. So it will be compatible with those.

I think Hollos uses the Signal protocol, which is similar, but not the same as MLS.
