  1. @ProPublica Most #ElectedOfficials do not understand:

    - The fundamentals for #EmergencyManagement
    - What a #disaster declaration does for their entity (local, state, or federal declarations)
    - What #FEMA does beyond 'fixing things' and uninformed opinions from what they've read in 'media articles'
    - What types and how much aid FEMA can provide
    - What a 'damage assessment' means and is used for
    - The expense of a functioning EM organization
    - How reliant 99.999% of local, state, and national economies are dependant on this system through the interconnected disaster recovery process

  2. In a surprise announcement, #Oregon received notification of a presidential disaster declaration for infrastructure damages from a flooding and landslide event in March 2025. The notification, which came late in the day on July 22 allows FEMA to begin program delivery for eligible costs in Coos, Curry, and Douglas counties.

Projects will be written to cover at least 75% of eligible repair costs.

Individual assistance and hazard mitigation funding was not included, but are listed as being 'under review'.

Five other states also received disaster declarations on 7/22/2025.

  3. 1/🧵 I've been invited to partner with a local county to put on a presentation on how private non-profits can best prepare for disasters in terms of mutual aid and access federal aid for recovery.

There's such a need for education for all organizations these days, this stuff is too complicated unless you can afford consultants.

Which creates #equity issues that many governments have difficulties in addressing.

I want to send some data into the ether that may interest people who wonder how US governments recover from the increasing occurrences of #disasters.

  4. Working as a SimCell Injector for a statewide exercise today and throughout the week. We're stress testing the State's systems to respond to a 9.0 Cascadia subduction event.

We will get some great data and opportunities for improvement from this effort.

  5. I was voluntold to attend FEMA's Western Region Wildfire Summit being held in Boise, ID this month. The topic list looks solid.

  6. My colleagues and I finished assessing damages from the January 2024 Winter Ice and Wind #storms... Wow. Some municipalities saw 3-4" of ice accumulation over a few days and near total loss of their urban tree canopies. If you've been to western #Oregon You know there's a ton of trees :(

~60% of assessed damages were from public utility providers' electrical distribution systems. I'm envisioning a future of buried lines.

    What a week!

  7. This paper highlights what forest managers have been observing for a few decades. Regime shifts from climate changes will exacerbate fires in the PNW #wildfire #pnw #oregon #washington #fire #forestry #ForestManagement #emgtoot
