On the same day, the EU Commission launched an infringement procedure against #Hungary for failing to implement the European Media Freedom Act #EMFA + the Audiovisual Media Services Directive #AVMSD:

"Hungary does not comply with provisions re interference in the work of #journalists", "restricting their economic activities and editorial freedom."

📆 Today marks the full entry into application of the European Media Freedom Act (#EMFA), a landmark step towards strengthening media pluralism and independence across the EU.

When implemented, the EMFA needs to provide:

🔹 Concrete safeguards to protect journalists, sources, & civil society

🔹 Greater transparency on the use of surveillance technologies

🔹 Accessible legal remedies for victims of #spyware

🔹 Clarification & strict limitation of national security exceptions

A key takeaway of the panel: while the European Media Freedom Act (#EMFA) entering into force this August is a crucial step, loopholes around the undefined ‘national security’ exception risk undermining its safeguards.
