Reason was, I had just been working on my SEE model, for Sustainable ecosystem evolution, and the beauty of this model that it is a) #evolution-based b) #emergent, and c) based on emergent forces. An activated #commons can come into a condition best described as "revolutionary evolution", having big potential for positive societal change. Most importantly it offers a better tool to the pisspoor bloody revolution with uncertain outcome, that so many are crooning about. Understandable, as now revolution is the only tool we have.

So.. mini-break from that.. browse the timeline, what do I see? Question about who leads the revolution, and some picture.

The most-valuable idea I have got from this book so far is that #consciousness could be an #emergent #property of #matter in the same way magnetic fields, for example, are an emergent property. Every so often, life hands you a moment so small and strange that it feels like a cosmic wink. Recently, while jotting down a thought for this very post, I meant to write:

“Life emerges out of oneness.”

Instead, my fingers offered me:

“Life emerges out of one mess.”

And honestly? Both felt true.

The slip wasn’t just funny — it was fractal. It mirrored the very idea I was trying to explore: that creation is not linear, predictable, or pristine. It’s iterative. It’s messy. It’s full of deviations that become discoveries. And in that way, the typo became the perfect doorway into this reflection.

Fractals: When One Pattern Becomes Many

Fractals are patterns that repeat themselves at different scales. Zoom in or zoom out, and the structure echoes itself — tree branches, lightning bolts, river deltas, blood vessels, coastlines. Simple rules govern them, yet they generate infinite complexity.

A fractal begins with a single seed pattern.
A gesture.
A shape.
A rule.

From that oneness, variation emerges. No two branches grow at the same angle. No two waves break the same way. The pattern is recognizable, but never identical.

This is unity expressing itself through diversity.

No human could grasp the aggregate meaning of that unanticipated, implicit, emergent behaviour. No human could divine the outcomes of their unforeseeable concoctions. Worse of all, all these models are inhered with biases and prejudices, both intentional and unintentional, that are embedded deep within these deep-learning models, whose untoward conducts are ever so subtle and complex as to be casually observable.

The invidious effects of these poorly-understood foundation models are insidious. By the time their detrimental behaviour becomes observable, it would be too late for society to countermand, for these models are already enmeshed within the social-political-economic fabric of the whole of humanity.

It is easy, for a lawyer like me, reflexively to shout, "#Regulate #AI". But in the present heady mix of delirium, confusion, delusion, and collusion, regulate exactly what and precisely how, pray tell.

Who will save society from AI?

Well, perhaps AI might....🤦‍♂️

Matrix multiplication is not inhered with empathy, conscience, judgement, elation, shame, and the like. Those are innately human characteristics, neither mechanical nor mathematical. Let us not surrender to the silicon-based machines the #ethical duty to be thinking, feeling carbon-based beings.

We have 2 important considerations regarding this topic, IMO.

One is that we are not separate from the world we study. That we must always allow for interactions we find in similar subjects external to us to be operating in similar fashion inside of our own #systems. That is, we cannot build our models separately, with the outcome of purely phenomenological & physiological perspectives. Of course, where the similarities are few, those unique views are necessary. Consciousness would be one area where our experience should be included & weighed heavy in the model.

The other comes from #reductionism, and the need to incorporate boundaries, phase changes, and other #emergent phenomena that won't agree with the #linear summation during the reconstruction of the parts we identified on the way down.

So going down the chain of molecules, elements, and atoms, for example, is not different from examining #evolution connections, or life itself. There is no reverse at some points, and even where there is time reversal #symmetry, the paths are not always direct, 1:1 increments. (see 'islands of stability', for example)

We have a bad tendency of always ending up framing it in black or white terms, like " #nature vs nurture", when the actual situations nearly always require both.

One of the unfortunate elements of the #scientific method centered on reduction is that the first impression (indeed very strong) comes in the results section, from the questions asked at the start. Those have been stripped of all #context variation & complexity, and that is where it leaves off in most cases. For the vast majority of humans, the deeper layers are never seen or explored; the simplified meme is what propagates most prolifically.

Our mission, should we choose to accept it, is to layer the #complexity back in, one layer at a time, and continue our pursuit of higher #knowledge. This will require some modifications to our current system!

It's a sad state of explanatory affairs (lack of) when people are still confusing #emergent qualitative terms of energy with the countable linear summation of its sources.

When these tendencies coexist in networks of oscillators, such as #whole_brain models, we say we are in the metastable regime. But how do we achieve #metastability without having to fine tune our model?
