I just learned that they make something called a reliance transfer switch. This might be a good option for both emergency power and for those who can’t afford a full home solar system and need to start small and grow their system as able.
A typical transfer switch is all or nothing. Your generator will be connected to every circuit and you may need to turn a lot of stuff off to not overload a small generator in an outage. A reliance transfer switch has each circuit selectable as grid, off, or generator powered.
For someone growing a solar system that would be connected in place of a generator. So you can add circuits to solar as your system is able that will be off grid, but still have the option of switching back to grid if solar can’t keep up.

The Clean Energy States Alliance has published a report on “What States Need to Know about #PlugInSolar”.
The report is summary about #balconysolar from an #American perspective.
Although we think the German prices are calculated a little bit to high, because we think you can have installation cost as low as 0,28 EUR/Wp, its a good overview.
It also contains a cost return calculator for #solar on the balcony for #US Consumers.
Amongst other the report also mentions #CPAP machines as good examples for #emergencypower use, higlighting the systems ability to provide #electrictiy even during #grid failure, if you have battery!

The exercise bike, dubbed HR Bank, was designed to provide urban dwellers with a reliable source of clean energy, but, perhaps more importantly, also for those in need of power during emergencies like natural disasters or wars.
“Our idea was that a person who bought an HR bank could not only use it as an external battery, charged from the sun or the grid, but in the absence of an external power source, could generate energy by pedalling,” said CEO Jonas Navickas.
A lot of thought has gone into this design with it not only being portable, but also storing a very useful 2kWh of power. Pedalling is not its only source of energy as it can also charge from the grid, car batteries, solar or wind power.
It is not only a clean source of power, but pedalling daily on it will help keep its owner fitter and healthier too.
The downside probably is the price of around €3,000 but I suppose you have to factor in it is a very useful battery storage, an exercise bike, and an emergency generator all rolled into one (saving some space too).
