  1. #World's #oceans hit highest temperature on record as #ElNiño grows
Average temp of the planet's seas outside polar regions hit 21.1C (70F) on Saturday, according to figures from European Copernicus #climatechange service.
That edges past 21.09C recorded on three separate days in March 2024, and is far above average for time of year.
Warmer oceans can have wide-reaching consequences, including supercharging #extremeweather, #sealevelrise and harming marine life.

  2. #Earth’s #oceans just hit their hottest temperature ever—it’s only going to get worse
The world’s oceans hit 21.10 Celsius last Saturday, breaking a record set in 2024
That’s not as hot as a warm bath, but it is hottest the world’s oceans have been since European Union’s Copernicus #ClimateChange Service (C3S) started keeping records in 1979.
The new high also reflects the fact that we are heading into an exceptionally strong #ElNiño year.

  4. World's oceans hit highest temperature on record as El Niño grows

「 Warmer seas help to fuel more extreme weather. They can provide storms with extra moisture and energy, and can intensify heatwaves on land in some coastal regions by reducing the cooling effect of sea breezes 」

  6. Projections suggest the incoming 2026–27 El Niño could be the strongest ever measured, with impacts lingering for up to a decade.

To protect vulnerable populations from extreme heat, drought and flooding, experts say nations must learn from past events.

  8. 🌊🔥 BREAKING NEWS: The oceans are hot, and somehow it's El Niño's fault, again. BBC's global weather update is longer than a Tolstoy novel, yet ironically, the only thing heating up faster than the Atlantic is the newsroom's air-conditioning. 🥵📺

  9. Earth’s oceans just broke a heat record. The implications will be massive

By Anthony Edwards, Aug 23, 2026

"Earth’s oceans were warmer than any day in recorded history Friday due to a combination of long-term human-caused global warming and short-term effects of #ElNiño.

The average sea surface temperature of 21.1 degrees Celsius, or 70 degrees Fahrenheit, breaks the old record of 21.09 degrees Celsius set many times in early 2024 during the most recent El Niño.

" 'There is quite a big certainty that sea surface temperatures globally are now higher than even the last warm period before the last ice age,' #LeonSimons, a climate systems analyst and executive director of the #ClubOfRome Netherlands, said during a webinar Sunday.

"Measurements are based on data from satellites, buoys and ships between 60 degrees south and 60 degrees north latitude and analyzed by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. Daily measurements date back to 1979, though July sea surface temperatures were the warmest month globally since at least 1854."
