Ello— it really needs to be spelled in Courier — quite intently; the schtick — “Facebook Killer” — was obviously going to doom it from the outset because any app which people describe primarily as being in opposition to something successful, is clearly going to have issues… but I didn’t know how deep the rot went.I’m amazed it lived so long.

Capitalism without constraint is #enshittification's handmaiden, and the latest victim is #Ello, the "indie" social media startup that literally promised - on the sacred honor of its founders - that it would never sell out its users. When Ello took VC and @waxy questioned how this could be squared with this promise, the founders mocked him and others for raising the question. Their response boiled down to "we are super-chill dudes and you can totally trust us."

@Infostack @andybaio I feel like you completely missed my point.
#Ello failed because the demand wasn't there. Ello made the same mistake #GooglePlus and #MeWe made. #Facebook users complain about Facebook, but don't join anti-Facebooks, because most of them don't hate Facebook as much as the people creating Facebook replacements do.
All the #Twitter alternatives are making the same mistake. Only difference in their favor is that Twitter may actually go out of business on its own.

Wondered what had happened to #Ello a couple of days ago and now this just popped up. Ello’s dead.
Also, someone in the comments mentions HerPlanet and Suite101. I vaguely remember those sites and it’s ridiculous how there’s barely a trace of them left on the internet. (I just googled them.)
So much recent history … just gone.

The social media site promised to put its users first.
Ello promised not be funded by selling third-party ads, not sell user data, and to bind any future company owner to the same terms. In the end, Ello broke all of its core rules. Then Ello shut-down so quickly that it didn't give its members any warning or time to get out with their user-generated content.This article is a cautionary tale of how high ideals mean nothing when you accept VC money. At some point, the VC money dries-up and they want to collect on their debts.
Also, I think it's notable that one of the founders went on to startup a company selling NFTs / crypto, and when that collapsed, he pivoted to a new startup churning out AI garbage.

It is almost five years now since I left #Ello after it completely lost its way under its third round of management (which I swear was just one guy running it off his laptop while using free Wi-Fi at a LoDo Denver coffee bar). I'm glad I have two people I remember from Ello's better days now sharing here in the Fediverse. I wonder if any others that became disappointed in Ello ended up here? I miss how its Communities worked and wish Pillowfort would do things that way.

The slowly-dying Ello is again showing expired SSL certs and Cloudflare errors, presently "Invalid SSL certificate".
Its parent/owner Talenthouse has apparently been experiencing severe financial difficulties of late. Wikipedia describes Talenthouse in the past tense, and has since 17 August.

Speaking of the the late #Ello , this little video on #ElementaryOS /#eOS reflects similar problems that that little Social Media service had, basically treating their Desktop OS Project as a Hipster Art Project instead of addressing the actual needs and wants of users. Their App Center isn’t making money either.

And today I remembered I’m also still on #Hive! I checked: yes, it’s alive. I follow exactly one (1) person, @scalzi, who hasn’t posted over there for eight months WHICH IS ACTUALLY a lot more than I ever did there, shame on me.
Thus, for Hive, all in all, take the term “alive” with a grain of salt.

@danielmrose Yeah, I had completely forgotten about them. But someone on here said that #Ello should join the Fediverse and I googled and was shocked to see that they were still around! Seems they've beaten the odds and found a small but loyal audience. Good for them, eh?
