Aug 24 at 11:14 AM EDTUpdate from the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team:
Firefighters are starting their Sunday with overcast skies and rain showers. Those conditions are all beneficial to the work firefighters are continuing on the Cottonwood Peak Fire.
The area is under the influence of monsoonal moisture. If the sun breaks out later today, the instability could spawn thunderstorms in the area. It raises concerns over strong, gusty outflow winds, localized heavy downpours and even some flooding and debris flow in burn scars. Any associated lightning also poses a threat of new fire starts. Absent some unanticipated change, future fire growth is likely to be limited…
…Firefighters patrolled high value areas overnight, keeping their eyes peeled for any hotspots along containment lines. Sunday’s efforts are planned to build upon recent successes, described as “solid victories” by a member of the Operations staff on the Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team.
In the northeast corner of the fire, two large sections of containment line have been joined together. Work continues to extend those lines to the north and south. Along the fire’s southern perimeter, crews and bulldozers will be utilized to hold and improve existing fireline and to extend it to the northwest. The structure protection group is being beefed up...

2/2There are nearly 1,000 people assigned to the fire. The fire perimeter is fully staffed day and night; and a spike camp is being set up on the East perimeter to allow crews to deploy quickly and reduce travel time from the main fire camp. A new group has been established whose task is to attack any new fire starts or to surge to any area experiencing significant fire activity.
Private pilots and all drone operators should be aware that the Temporary Flight Restriction over the fire is expected to be enlarged again. It is in place to safeguard the helicopters and airtankers being utilized to suppress the fire.

Aug 22 at 10:34 PM EDTAugust 22 Evening Update from Eastern Area Complex Incident Management Team:
Size: 122,110 acres, 10% containment
Current Situation: Firefighters continue to utilize all tools and resources available to build containment around the Cottonwood Peak Fire. On Friday, the structure protection group reinforced a multi-faceted protection strategy in and around Tuscarora. Friday night operations will maintain a heavy presence in the area.
High terrain driven winds pushed the fire to the west and southwest Friday with structure protection shifting quickly to aggressively work on protection of ranches in those areas both on the ground and through the air. Friday night operations will continue a strong push to protect priority values at risk in this area.
Despite the shifting winds, excellent progress in connecting lines occurred Friday on many portions of the perimeter. Wet weather is forecast to move into the area as early as Saturday night and continue into Sunday. Firefighters will prepare for strong potential outflow winds of 30 to 40 mph preceding this system and will actively work to hold lines during that time.

Aug 6 at 2:45 PM EDTUpdate from Bureau of Land Management - Nevada:
Size: 69,064 acres - Containment: 20%
Firefighters have secured the south-southeast corner of the fire around the community of Midas. On the east side, the fire reached the Castle Ridge Fire scar from last year, allowing crews to insert engines and dozers and secure much of that flank. Resources will begin shifting to the west side of the fire, where crews are spiking out and constructing direct and contingency lines. A contingency group is actively scouting options on the western edge. Last night, a finger of fire pushed down the Jakes Creek drainage on the southwest corner. Night shift crews were able to access the area, build roads, and establish a checkline. Efforts today will focus on reinforcing that line.

Don Zirbel, Staff Reporter
Aug 5 at 3:22 PM EDTThe fire is 66,292.9 acres (Jakes and Snowstorm combined) per the perimeter uploaded to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which is visible on the Watch Duty map under the Active Fire Perimeters map layer.
Note: Fire perimeters are preliminary and indicate general burn area but do not reflect structure protection efforts by firefighters. A structure within a fire perimeter may not be damaged or destroyed.

Aug 5 at 1:09 PM EDTAugust 5 Morning Update from Bureau of Land Management - Nevada:
Size: 55,000 acres - Containment: 15%
There are 554 personnel assigned to the Jakes Fire, which continues to show extreme fire behavior, particularly on the southeast corner. Firefighters have tied the fire into the existing road system, providing some anchor points for suppression. The fire made a significant push eastward yesterday, but previous fuels treatments and an old fire scar are helping slow its progression.
Crews are reinforcing the west side of the fire, with influxes of Type 1 and spike crews working to button up steep terrain. The main resistance to control continues to be spotting ahead of the fire front.

Aug 4 at 9:30 PM EDTThe fire is now 5% contained.
The fire is displaying active behavior, including flanking and backing spread, with wind-driven runs pushing the head of the fire through receptive fuels. On the flanks, the fire is moving laterally across the landscape, while backing fire is progressing slowly downslope or against the wind with low flame lengths. However, gusty winds are contributing to intermittent runs, increasing the rate of spread and potential for growth in exposed areas. Firefighters are working to hold containment lines and slow progression, especially in areas where shifting winds and terrain may influence fire movement.
