  1. HAROLD BUDD, ELIZABETH FRASER, ROBIN GUTHRIE, SIMON RAYMONDE
    The Moon And The Melodies
    1986 Canada pressing

I just spent over 6 hours doing Christmas shopping, and I’m like Ben Stiller in the movie Heavyweights after the fat kids lock him up.

    I am a broken man.

So it’s time for an incredible #ambient #etheral album to help relax me.

I’ve long been a fan of this record, and when I first discovered it, it was solely because I saw the name Elizabeth Fraser on it. A woman who’s voice is OTHERWORLDLY and who’s work I already loved from The Cocteau Twins.

An incredible evening listen, and a record I’m glad to have an ‘86 pressing of, as all the reissues I’ve heard don’t sound very good.

Beautiful album. A lovely, glacial hug.
    Serenity NOW.

  2. 🔹 Fauna Primavera 2025: Massive Attack 🔹

  4. I don't ever need to hear it.
I respect an artist's privacy and their humanity, but by Odin is the world a better place for the art they both created?

  6. I’ve been listening to #MassiveAttack lately (I was of course aware of them but didn’t listen much), and I have to say #ElizabethFraser has an amazing voice. The kind so rare nowadays where she can hit each note, cleanly, hold it, and not play any gimmicks on it. All while giving real emotion, even when singing softly.

And no #autotune in sight (the cheapest and worst vocal effect ever).

#Teardrop is the signature track of course, but #BlackMilk is lovely.

  7. As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 866 on The List, submitted by leonardo.

I assumed I knew nothing of this musician and composer, as the name, face, and sound didn’t ring any bells whatsoever. But then Wikipedia told me that Tiersen did the score/soundtrack for the French film Amélie! Mon dieu, I love Amélie!

While only one or maybe two tracks on this album remind me of Amélie, it does makes me think it could be a soundtrack to an as-yet unseen film. It’s positively full of absolute gems and a whole swirl of moods, and it also features a nice handful of collaborators including Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins, Stuart A. Staples of the Tindersticks, and the legendary Jane Birkin.

Given that Tiersen’s work apparently is often compared with that of Philip Glass and Michael Nyman, it’s safe to say that his work is right up my alley. I plan on checking it all out, tout de suite, starting with his most recent work up on Bandcamp. In fact, as I am writing, I randomly clicked on the cover I liked best in his BandcampPortrait (2019) – and the very first song features not only Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))), but also harpischord. I’m in love.

*The survey choices that led to this spotlight were “D”, “A”, and “Y”, following the earlier surveys with “B”, “L”, “U”, “E” and “M”, “O”, “N”. The third letter was the winning selection, so the survey result was translated as picking the third album in The List by an artist whose name starts with the letter “Y”.

  9. Cocteau Twins - Blue Bell Knoll

This was the first LP that was released in the US (those of us on the early bus had bought the imports of the previous albums), and it's kind of a summary statement of where they were then—almost an introduction.

This probably has the most indecipherable lyrics in the Twins canon (which is saying something), and some of the most lyrical singing. Beautiful water treading.

  10. Cocteau Twins - Treasure

This might be my favorite Cocteau Twins album.

It's flawless from stasrt to finish, starting with the one-two punch of Ivo and Lorelei... and it never lets up.

I have to assume that the presence of new member Simon Raymonde is what kicked things up a notch.

Superb. No better place to start, if you're new to the Cocteau Twins...

  11. Cocteau Twins - Head Over Heels

I wanted to pull Garlands, to honor original member Will Heggie, but it wasn't right to hand.

That said, this is the first album that pointed the way towards their later work, dreamier and less aggressive than the pounding first album.

And it's just Fraser and Guthrie and a drum machine making a glorious, swirling confusion of mysteriously beautiful melody and vocals.

  12. Song of the Day no.17

Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas

"Heaven or Las Vegas" is a song by Scottish band Cocteau Twins. It was released by Capitol Records in October 1990 as the second single from the Heaven or Las Vegas album. The song has been described as dream pop
