  2. Pook-Emu Bee: Links For 05-01-26

We welcome May with a new edition of the daily Pook-Emu Bee links (after a spotty week). It looks nice outside my window... 1. Stripe introduces Link, a digital wallet that autonomous AI agents can use, too (Sarah Perez for TechCrunch. April 30, 2026.) While this is certainly exciting, I would suggest considering not allowing "autonomous AI agents" to make purchases on your behalf. 2. 3. "[T]wo physicists took a closer look at the mathematics of the problem—and came up with a plausible explanation. [I]t really is the case that elevators travel in the opposite direction than you intend more often than not, as Gamow and Stern’s statistics show."

  4. CW: Tunnel to an elevator

    Visited Durie Hill Elevator.
    Built 1919.
A 213 metre tunnel takes you to a 66 metre elevator. Both dug into Durie Hill on the south bank of the Whanganui river.
You can take your bike up!
The elevator operator is a delightful lady. She's doing her PhD on the selling of merchandise in elevators. If we come across any others in our travels, we were asked to email her details. I'll keep my eye out.
The tunnel is lit and changes colour in a sequence that's quite magic.
I'm in awe of the whole thing.

  6. Beat the Springs in Donkey Kong
Another arcade classic strategy rundown, and again c0ncerning Donkey Kong. As the video rightly notes, the Springs board, a.k.a. Elevators, is most devoted players' greatest barrier to playing to the kill screen, and even pros mess it up sometimes. I think it's the worst part of the game, personally. Donkey Kong is great,

  7. Do you know what really annoys me for so many years? That in so many movies or tv series elevators obviously fake. Why not spend a bit more details at the set design to let elevators look more real? Sometimes not two layers of doors in a modern elevator, missing cap between floor and elevator and so on... I could ignore it, but it's impossible 😭

  8. Getting a little #liminal for the #ColorADay #YellowThu prompt. This was the #hotel we stayed at for Weird Al. Old, weird, not exactly in great shape. Indoor "water park" that only operates on weekends. We woke up to a flea market in the lobby.

  9. On the absence of #UX in the everyday things, episode #259:

You're standing in front of an elevator door and see following panel. You want to go down. Where do you press?

  10. Sorry for posting so many YouTube videos but this is great and geeky: a video essay about "Akira elevators", those platforms that travel horizontally and vertically at the same time. I remember the Half-Life example and the original from Akira. They are an awesome design but a bit like mechas they are futuristic tools that feel incredibly dangerous to build as a means to transport humans.

  12. I was disappointed to see they're tearing down the Landbrukets hus building in Oslo because that was home to one of the only known Paternoster lifts in Norway. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paternos

And of course, @tomscott once did a video about them. youtu.be/YgJBD1wf-YQ?si=EIcP3q

  20. Simple idea that needs to happen: In elevators, if you push the wrong floor button, push it again to cancel.

What other simple ideas are interesting?
