Hundreds of seals at Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery just north of San Simeon. It’s molting season, when they shed their fur and top layer of skin in large patches and remain on land for about a month while growing new coats. #elephantseals #moltingseason #sansimeon

Here is one more Elephant Seal pic from Año Nuevo State Park - We almost did not spot him on the walk down to the beach. You wouldn't think that something that large could blend in, but He was giving it his best try.

Today is #InternationalSealDay - So I may be sharing some of my favorite Seal pics taken over the last few years:

For example, this proud dude was blocking our return path at Año Nuevo State Park over the Xmas holidays in 2024; and while the guide had to provide us an alternative way back, he rewarded us with this pose.

Sad note - There is an Avian Flu outbreak among the seals at the park this year, so keep them in your thoughts.

This young, male, elephant seal is on the beach at Año Nuevo while the rest of his colony is on another beach further North. This one is exhausted from the competition with the other males to mate and has taken a break to be alone for a while. The ranger who told me this was a young man in his late 20's. I could not help wondering if there was some projection going on here :-).

@sundogplanets I am certain that #ElephantSeals are worse. Especially the #AlphaMales from the #DeltaQuadrant. They are much larger, much louder, eat more of the crab and calamari that I like the best, and exhibit wildly excessive #SexualDimorphism. The beach masters’ #harem acquisition also condemns many perfectly fine male elephant seals to lives as #incels. I took a #CrownCollege Core class at #UCSC in 1968 from #BurneyLeBoeuf, who was just beginning his studies at #AñoNuevoStatePark while also fathering the field of #Psychobiology. Admittedly, the class was on an unrelated subject—#ScienceCultureAndMan, but, still, #ProveMeWrong.
