  6. With #Linux on my more than capable 2010 #MacBookPro I have distro-hopped in recent months to find a #Distro that is stable, doesn't induce constant fan noise and complements the Mac design ethos. Surprisingly Ubuntu 26.04 delivers but the most satisfying to use is #ElementaryOS8 Looking forward to what is in the pipeline for OS9 @elementary @danirabbit

  10. ElementaryOS is failing an early test: the update syste m screams it has dozens of updates and won't install any of them.

On a newly (several weeks ago) untouched, unused machine.

    Not a good look.

  13. ElementaryOS passed its can-I-live-with-it test, so it's going on the old Mac "Shit Slow" Mini. It's gotta be faster than MacOS on that...

  16. Elementary OS installed on a MacBook Pro 2014. There was some hurdles on the way. I had to find a thunderbolt dock to make a internet connection and the drive was not to easy to format. But it works now ,and most important,it is safe to use again #linux #newbie #elementaryos8 #dropwindows #goodbyemacos

  20. Does anyone know how to remove the Calendar & Mail App from #ElementaryOS 8? Even if you uninstall them from AppCenter they still remain and cause havoc if you use another calendar - as the 'Default App' setting is not respected. #Elementary #ElementaryOS8 Looks like even #Linux distros now suffer #enshittification

  22. The new #Elementary OS8 is becoming more and more like Windows - only difference is that instead of a Blue Screen, you get a White Screen 🤦 🤬 #ElementaryOS #ElementaryOs8

  24. @midtsveen the worst is that some Apps now have the 'close, minimize, full screen' in the top right of the App Screen - like in Windows. Others have the 'close' the way it is supposed to be on the top left, others you need to 'right click' to get controls. And you can no longer minimise Apps from the Dock, by clicking the App. It's a bit of a nightmare. #ElementaryOS #ElementaryOS8 #Elementary #Distro #Linux

  26. @midtsveen I notice quiet a few bugs and Apps not working in 'Secure' Wayland mode. There's a problem with the numeric keys working, then not working and you constantly need to hit NUM Lock - to login it works, then in Terminal it does not. If you try to add a new account in the Nextcloud App, the screen freezes up and also had the Terminal freeze up a few times amongst other annoyances . I don't think 'Secure' Wayland is ready for mainstream use. #ElementaryOS8 #ElementaryOS

  28. Another item of concern in #ElementaryOS8 is that Location Services are enabled by default. I seem to recall that it was always disabled by default in the past. #Privacy #Linux #Distro #Elementary #ElementaryOS

  30. Just testing the new #ElementaryOS8 and found for whatever inexplicable reason that the Firewall is disabled by default - unlike in Ubuntu where it is enabled by default and blocks all incoming connections for your protection.

To further compound things, if you try to enable it through the UI, you get logged out.

For those that are not familiar you can enable it manually using CLI:

    'ufw default deny incoming'

    'ufw deny 22'

    'ufw enable'

  31. Elementary OS 8 is out, and it's a solid upgrade with wayland and flatpaks installed by default. The distro is very well thought out, beautiful UI.

My only reservations are that the CPU usage is pretty high even when nothing is running, and the elementary-specific apps use lots of RAM. I'd love to see it more optimized, less cpu usage, and ~1 GB of RAM on a clean boot. Chromebooks could be converted to it easily then.

  36. @itsfoss I'll always love #Ubuntu because it's so easy to install and setup on any laptop. I can quickly get up and going, and just run a shell script to setup my dev env. Recently been using #elementaryos8 so that the younger ones in my family can play around with Linux safely. I've used #RedHat and #centos professionally. I tried #fedora but it was a pain to find and install drivers.
