  1. The big reason I wanted to make something like this was... well, there were two reasons, I guess? One for stability. That's just obvious I think. But the _second_ reason was that the leads from my power supply were getting kind of corroded just from the fumes of the electrolyte being energised and I'm very pleased to say that this clearly stops that problem entirely. A+++ would print again.

Also I can report that the plastic seemed as unaffected by all of this as one would think and hope. But it's good to see it work as hoped.

  3. well that used a lot of nickel in kind of an interesting pattern

I _think_ the end - which was just as protected as these sides - got entirely drawn off, so I'm quite happy about that really

    (continued from mastodon.murkworks.net/@moira/ )

I was a little worried that I'd end up with two solid bars of untouched metal down the sides but it clearly gets thinner on the way down so I think despite the lesser access to the electrolyte, it still gets picked up for plating and that's good!

  5. It's a TEST OBJECT!

A bit of leftover copper wire. It was way shinier at first but it's got darker with more plating.

Also, the area where the wire was is still very copper, so I need to rotate the position during the process, but I'm not understanding why it's such a large area.

  7. Like this! It's definitely less awkward. A longer wire would be better, though - and that does not require reprinting anything.

hopefully the plastic is okay to use, i will find out

  13. @iFixit sometimes the tips are old and used and the plating has been damaged over the years/decades. the companies and/or products are no more, no more spare parts, but the iron is still good. Then what ? What about tipps on how to "repair" the "electro plating" of the tip ? #repair #electroplating

  15. Take 2 on printing these damn coins. The first attempt failed just before this point.

Cleaning the plate with those itty bitty stars on it made out of springy PLA meant little tiny plastic shurikens went everywhere.

Yeah, we're gonna have to vacuum today. Upside, maybe we'll also get to have a first go at electroplating a print today, too.

  18. the bits i plated yesterday i started in with the much lower voltages and more time and was pretty happy with the result so hopefully that'll keep being true

but will it keep away the rust? that's what i actually care about here most

  24. I'm going to have to just blue this spring after all:

    mastodon.murkworks.net/@moira/

The reason is that while I could get nickel onto most of it, there are parts that were just too close together and/or too far away (chemically) from the donor plate to get nickel onto without way more complicated shenanigans than I'm going to muster.

This means inside the coil. Also where the coils rest against each other, but mostly the inside.

I think this'll be fine overall, but it definitely shows limits to my current nickel-plating setup. The outside looks real good but the spring gets wet and you dry it, there's more rust coming from the inside of the spring and that's not okay.

    So, bluing it is.

  26. Honestly pleased with this, this was just a chunk of rust when I got it. I didn't even know if it was salvagable and kind of doubted it.

  28. three minutes per side, no sanding really - this is just about water resistance. i sanded a little after this (600 grit wet) and am going for two more minutes per side at 3.5 volts

  30. so if your vinegar-based nickel plating solution gets real dark and doesn't plate as well but is still very clear, can you just add more vinegar? does that work?

  33. A plating we will go, a plating we will go, high ho the nickel plating we will go.🎶

Needed some silver tone tie tack clutch backs, but only had some gold tone on hand. So nickel plating to the rescue.

1st time nickel plater. Prepared the nickel acetate solution last night.

Cleaned the parts using my small sonicator and some hot soapy water. Rinsed and handled with gloves to prevent contamination with finger oil.

Hooked the tie tack back to the cathode (negative) side of my power supply using some cooper wire. Small part, so set the voltage to 3V. Plated for a couple of minutes while swirling and rotating the piece. Turned out perfect for my needs. 🎉 #electroplating
