  6. AAAS: "In India, train tracks threaten a giant telescope" This is a story about a conflict between 2 of my favorite things, astronomy + electric trains. 'Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) 200 kms east of Mumbai listens for faint low-frequency radio signals emanating from the distant reaches of the cosmos.' It features a network of 30 antennas, each 45 m wide, spread over 25 sq km. The telesceope, which has been in service for 30 yrs, is among the most sensitive in the world at low frequencies, picking up signals of 'neutral hydrogen' from the very early universe. Now there is an agreement "in principle" for a pair of high-speed rail lines that would slice through the array, as close as 960 meters of some antennas. “The key villain here is the pantograph, which is perched on top of the rail engine, constantly touching the overhead high-tension power line to draw electricity to propel the train,” says Yashwant Gupta, director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics. As the pantograph makes + breaks contact with the line, is creates sparks + electromagnetic bursts that would drown the entire spectrum of faint radio singals. "When astronomers selected the GMRT site in 1990, it was sparsely populated and surrounding hills protected it from electromagnetic smog produced by distant urban areas." Same sad dilemma as the communication satellites being put into orbit higher than the Hubble Telescope. also still producing great science.   #astronomy    #electrictransportation
