Once you have the electricity you can do anything… but how many electric tractors are there? Does John Deere (as an example manufacturer) have an electric tractor available?🤔 Or, should the question be: how many electric tractors does John Deere have available at reasonable prices? 🤔😀

  2. This is actually pretty cool, watch their video.

An electric single-axle tractor, but instead of just replacing the ICE with an electric motor, someone really thought it through. Invidivual wheel motors so it can turn on the spot. And instead of wrestling a lurching beast, it is remote controlled.

The row spacing is also wider and there's an variety of attachments.

The price is also relatively civil at USD 7500. For a single-axe tractor that is still very high, but you get something better.

Its also feasible to build yourself as the gearing should be fairly minimal. With bigger wheels and a swappable battery it could be a universal beast of burden for homesteading and small scale sustainable forestry.

  3. Had a look at electric mini tractors and found this Soletrac e25. Interesting, because size and capability wise it is (on paper) comparable to our 40 year old Iseki, around 1 ton, 19 kW electric motor, small hydraulic pump, optional front loader.

The 25 kW Li-NMC battery needs 5.5 hours for a full charge. But the runtime claims of "Full Day (depending on load)" are for driving around empty, not work. Running a powered implement (e.g. a rotavator/wood chipper), it will do 1-2 hours. That can be enough for some homesteading use.

But the price is USD 30k for the base machine.

A brand new Kubota (if for some silly reason you insist on brand new) is around half that. A used one much less. Financially, it makes no sense yet 🤷

  4. Compared to how companies like John Deere fight calls for the "#RightToRepair, this new generation of #OpenSource and hackable #farm tools will unshackle #farmers and allow them to build the tools they need, without the "blessing" of Big Tractor.

Farmers are a resilient and creative bunch: watch for an explosion of innovation.

Also I'm super glad that the people who grow our food will no longer have to breathe diesel fumes: they really deserve better.
