  1. This is the wrong wiring right? The fuse would never trigger with the neutral (blue) wired like this? The source and load seem to be wired backwards too. This seemed very odd to me, but I am not a qualified sparky so maybe I am wrong? The switch itself has fused together from overheating and the fuse never blew because it is wired wrong. Replacing the switch didn't help with the overheating, which means there is too much current flowing, right?

  3. I can add that of the capacitors that did not explode, all six tested as good, with low ESR and within tolerances.

Ještě chybí víčka na kraje a čeká mě zkrátit přívodní kabel k 3D tiskárně a sušičce filamentů.

  13. #USB continues to infiltrate our lives...

I might be at the point where I need to keep some things powered by USB, rather than constantly swapping a charging cable. So I thought I'd look for a multi-point charger, one that seems reliable, not a #fireHazard, that sort of thing. What comes up?

Lots of variations on this... 😞

  15. One more thing out of storage; possible refurb project.

This Morphy-Richards QU10 convection heater dates to maybe* late 1950s?

It served as my main source of heating for a decade or so from 1996, though I always felt the need to keep an eye on it as it has no thermostat, no switch, and I'm not sure if it has a thermal cut-out. 😟

I think I replaced the plug around then.

  16. The joy of fixing something that has been broken for over 5 years!!
We had an electrical fault in a socket in the house that connected our dishwasher! But the dishwasher was broken and we didn't use the socket so it got left. Multiple times I tried to find the cause for the issue (a faulty earth) which only affected this one socket!
A had a suspicion that the fault lay behind a cupboard that was put in when we had the kitchen renovated but didn't have sufficient belief that made it worth ripping the cupboards out! Yesterday I freed the cupboard from the attachments and found a live socket and switch point! And inside the switch a disconnected earth wire! I reconnected the earth and the fault cleared.
Joy o joy ... But why couldn't the workmen that did the job have converted the switch and socket into junction boxes! Now I need to decide ~ put the cupboard back or do the conversions first!!
    (Get an electrician in!!)

  18. Is there anyone on here who understands auto electrics? I thought I did but I'm baffled by my boat engine/alternator/dashboard. Please DM if you think you can help, we don't need to bore everyone else. #BoatsThatToot #boats #boating #cars #electrics

  22. I have what appears to be a neon bulb indicator lamp but it says 25V. Not 125; 25.

Does that make sense? Is 25VAC workable for a neon bulb?

  24. I was thinking I wanted make a thing to take weak AAA or AA batteries and chain them together to put out like 5V that I could throw on a USB plug to put charge into something else that charges over USB to get that last bit of power out of them.

'Cause if you read an unloaded weak battery it'll show like 1.2V or 1.3V or something, and that's pretty easy to stack, right? And if you look at a battery discharge graph for AA/AAA alkalines and do the maths that's some legitimate power left.

    (1/2 probably)

  26. ...because I'd been thinking after it did it AGAIN a couple of days ago "maybe it's the RF fuckery of this neighbourhood in general and here in particular, maybe that's it" so was putting RF chokes on the signal lines because hey I have them so why not

and the white wire I wasn't even working with said "poit" and i went "well, that ain't normal" and now you know the rest of the story

i really hope this fixes this bullshit because holy crap i hate it

  28. and the thing is being quick-response battery-backed-up but still cheap, they're not gonna tell you "hey, the power situation here is weirdly bad," they're just gonna blink green once in a while going "yep, I got power, all good"

  29. I may've found the underlying problem causing increasing numbers of false building-wide smoke detector alarms.

it's definitely _a_ problem, could be _the_ problem

    basically

intermittent neutrals are not here to show you a good time

they are here to show you a bad time

someone added onto a circuit after initial wiring, definitely not my work and I'm p. sure not work of anyone I've hired, it's old - probably builder, probably a change order at the last minute

either way it was not what they call "workmanlike" and yanking wires around to do it _may_ and _may not_ have been involved in a neutral being _mostly_ separated from the detector network

it would've got worse every time we changed a battery on that unit too, so

    maybe

  31. Well, second fix was completed and plugged in, no bang, pop or crackle! I now have additional lights and a better placed set of sockets! Hopefully no more extension cables sprawled all across the floor!
I also have an energy monitor plugged into the garage consumer unit! So I can tell how much electricity my power tools consume! #DIY #Workshop #electrics #redo

  33. In my opinion self-adjusting wire strippers are the best for wire stripping, they can strip even the tinniest wires and are the easiest to use. I have a fairly generic one, there's no branding on it, at first when I saw it I was fairly sceptical because of it, plus it was dirt cheap compared to branded ones. I thought it can't be any good, but I was proven wrong after I bought it and tried it out afterward. 😁

  35. Called by a friend. Dodgy light switch tripping the RCD... I am "techy" - could I take a look?

    Simple fix - new switch.

The old one was obviously faulty as the rocker was not rocking! I opened it to see why, and found the the terminals had arc-welded themselves together!

  37. I opened up one of those outlet bricks that splits your outlet into six plus two USB ports bc the USB part stopped working

i got it open which was a MASSIVE pain in the ass bc they used a LOT of glue so I'm already "whelp this is done but I still want to see what's wrong" and i see a couple of parts that don't look quite right but idk maybe?

so i rig up power and trace voltages through the USB converter board and get to a little DC rectifier chip and test it and get 9 volts out so i'm like ??? and "well maybe they're doing it in stages for some reason" but i check my meter to make sure it's not sekrit AC and try again and that's when it goes POW

    guess i found it

    now it's a single-stage converter to 0 volts

    in the bin xD

  40. Is this - from #chatgpt actually correct?

    which inverter will use the most energy: (a) a 2000w inverter running a 150w device, or (b) a 300w inverter running a 150w device?
The inverter that will use the most energy is (a) a 2000w inverter running a 150w device. The reason for this is that the inverter needs to generate enough power to supply the device, and the excess power generated is lost as heat. The higher the wattage of the inverter, the more energy it will use even if the device it is running only requires a small amount of power. In this case, the 2000w inverter will consume more energy than the 300w inverter as it needs to generate more power to supply the 150w device.

I got a different answer from an inverter manufacturer, yesterday.
