  1. @paulschoe please buy 1x #sodium cell and drive a nail through it

Is #sodium safer than #lithium ? It seems like "it depends"
    techxplore.com/news/2026-04-sa
It seems sodium-ion can also thermal run away when puctured for example

what safety risks are associated with sodium-ion batteries?

Thermal runaway / fire: still possible (especially with flammable organic electrolytes and high states of charge), though many studies find SIBs generally show lower heat release and slower propagation than Li‑ion cells.

Electrolyte flammability and decomposition gases: conventional non‑aqueous electrolytes can ignite or produce toxic/reductive gases during abuse or overheating; nonflammable electrolytes are an active research area.

SEI instability and parasitic reactions: sodium salts and solvents can form less stable solid–electrolyte interphases than lithium systems, causing continuous side reactions... #goodbms is key (again) #need #team #electricalengineer build better #bms

  3. Hi floss.social. Just moved in from fosstodon.org/@ygor

I'm an #ElectricalEngineer from #Brazil, currently living in #France for many years. I work as a #SoftwareDeveloper, writing proprietary software for #microfluidics (I do wish I could work on #FreeSoftware for a living instead). My favorite programming language is #rustlang, but I use/have used about a dozen other languages, they're alright. I'm also a fan of #animation.

  5. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬! 💫
At last week’s @girlsday 26 students had the chance to explore careers in science that are still often considered “male-dominated.” They experienced hands-on research at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy – not only as astronomers, but also as electrical engineers and precision mechanics. 👩‍🔬🔧💡
🛠️ They could choose from four exciting workshops:
🔭 Pulsar Workshop: 10 students worked with real data from the 100-meter radio telescope in Effelsberg 📡 to search for pulsars – which can even be used to test Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Our colleagues provided worksheets and the necessary software for the task. 💻
🤖 Line Follower: 4 participants soldered and assembled an autonomous robot that follows a pre-set line – all by itself! And yes, they got to take it home with them. 🔩✨
⚡ Tesla Transformer: 8 girls built their very own Tesla transformer – strong enough to light up a fluorescent tube just by being nearby – without any contact! 💥💡
🧩 Puzzle Workshop: 4 students crafted their own aluminum puzzle pieces in our workshop and learned that massive structures like radio telescopes are built from many small, custom-made parts – not mass-produced ones. 🛠️🔍
Curiosity, energy, and lots of tech – thank you to everyone who made this day so special! 💜👩‍🔧 We’re already looking forward to next year!

Fire chaos puts Heathrow and Grid bosses in the firing line

"More than 1,300 #flights were cancelled, affecting almost 300,000 passengers. More cancellations are expected...

The fire appears to have taken hold after 25,000 litres of oil used as cooling insulation within one of the #transformers ignited. The website Politico reported that early investigations suggested a mistake by an #ElectricalEngineer could have been to blame."

  16. @saahbs
    Ingeneous method.

    That's a big gap between "1800" and 95.
    😀

Wondering if an #ElectricalEngineer could do some magic with motor start capacitors?

  20. Thinking over modding my ~1998 Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Force Feedback Steering wheel. Back in the day (~10 years ago) someone showed how to make it go up to around 900 degrees. (See below why only 900)

Problem is that there is from what I can tell, 7 sets of wires that go to buttons inside the wheel, like face buttons, and at 900 degrees you're putting a ton of stress on them.

So I'm reaching out into the world and asking all of you: How would you solve this?

  22. Enjoy our latest episode - 448: Little Squiggles All Around embedded.fm/episodes/448 with Carl Bugeja.

Carl makes actuators out of PCBs, puts them to work flapping origami bird wings (or moving robot rovers), and takes videos of the whole process. Oh, and get this, self-soldering circuits.

  28. @Hypx @muratk3n #ElectricalEngineer here who has literally designed inverters... Of course AC/DC conversions will have loss. Pick your poison. Lower voltages will have higher losses. DC fast charging is by far > 90% efficient. Even then we're talking 0.9*0.99*0.9 = 80.2% efficiency assuming a crappy DC fast charger.

Still way way way better than 48% hydrogen.

  32. Migrated from another instance to this one, so here's a new #introduction
    👋 :

I thought I wanted to become a professional #pilot when I was a teenager. I earned my private pilot's license when I was 17. Going the professional route didn't pan out, thus the handle of "DefectiveWings".

I started off working as an #electricalEngineer when I graduated from college, then did a career shift to IT helpdesk in 2009. Moved to desktop support, systems, and then over to web programming.

I currently work at a small tech company in charge of/ responsible for all things IT and security/audit related (I joined this mastodon so I could follow #infosec information easier). I love #automation, with #saltstack being the tool of choice for #linux and #pdq for #windows at $DAYJOB.

    I enjoy #php, #GravCMS, and #Drupal7.

I've been a #gamer almost my entire life. If you ever played any of the Descent series, I'll insta-follow you :)

I hope to get swap funny IT stories with you and maybe learn a thing or two from y'all.

  33. Got my first multimeter! A cheap one, but we all gotta start somewhere :Blobhaj: :BlobHajMlem: #electrics #electricalengineer
