  1. I support my local trans friends & the larger trans community in being against involuntary conversion therapy for trans minors by their parents. I had supported the #BCGreens on both of their past attempts to get involuntary conversion therapy banned in BC. The #BCNDP tossed it out, both times. The #BCConservatives also support involuntary conversion therapy. #BCGreenParty is the only political party in #BritishColumbia that has consistently fought hard for the rights & dignity of transfolks. The other two parties are transphobic & do pinkwashing PR, while supporting ongoing harms against transfolks.

  2. The revelations about the government’s numbers were also frustrating for Green Party Leader Sonia Furstenau.

“This government — and in particular when it comes to anything to do with health care — loves rolling out a whole bunch of numbers that they think are going to somehow convince people that what they're experiencing in their communities isn't real,” she told the IJF.

But she said she was exhausted by the other parties’ deflection on the issue, and by their shared push for involuntary care. She described secured treatment facilities as the “the most expensive end of the continuum of care” for substance use disorders, and said they are not well supported by the evidence.

“We are starving for access to preventive and proactive mental health care services in this province, and we hear again and again from parents who say ‘I couldn't get help from my child when they needed it,’” Furstenau said.

“The response of both Eby and Rustad is to say, well, we'll wait until that person is in absolutely the worst state of crisis and then we'll force them into involuntary care. It makes no sense.”

  3. #BCNDP unelected & current #BCPremier #DavidEby flips on forced treatment/involuntary care. They're leaning more to the right - taking same policy positions on addiction & mental health as the BC #Conservatives 👎People need mental wellness services to be included under Pharmacare because it hasn't been included. People can't afford to access many services that would help them a lot. There's long wait lists for the very few free to access programs. We need better funding for public health that includes mental health & addictions because they're interconnected.

[ #BritishColumbia will be opening secure facilities to provide #InvoluntaryCare under the #MentalHealth Act for those with severe #addictions who are mentally ill, the premier announced Sunday, just days ahead of the start of a provincial election campaign.

David Eby pledged the #NDP would change the law in the next legislative session to "provide clarity and ensure that people, including youth, can and should receive care when they are unable to seek it themselves."

"People with addiction challenges, brain injuries and mental-health issues need compassionate care and direct and assertive intervention to help them stabilize and rebuild a meaningful life," he said in a news release.]
