A number of questions remained unanswered. How much money was involved? How much did the investment yield?

Sinds gisteren online: Survey m.b.t. de actualisatie van #EIF het EU interoperability framework https://interoperable-europe.ec.europa.eu/collection/community/news/next-generation-eif-survey EIF en de Interoperability Act Europe zijn van belang voor Europese overheidsdiensten. In NL is EIF verankerd in NORA. Vul 'm in! Er is ook een relatie met de rol van overheden in Data Spaces en de trusted data transactions standaarden die we in CEN/CENELEC #JTC25 helpen ontwikkelen voor de Data Act.

Well that's my Festival over for another year.
Tonight I saw the NDT/Complicite collaboration, Figures in Extinction.
In many ways it was brilliant. The dancing was brilliant - NDT always are. The set design and lighting were brilliant (although in the habit of much modern dance, the illumination was quite dark - not brilliant enough, then).
But it was way too long, and at times self indulgent. The third act could have been cut by half. ...1/2

Last night's Festival concert was the Aurora Orchestra. I went because they were playing Shostakovich Symphony No.5. It was brilliant, as expected.
What wasn't expected was the first half, which featured cellist Abel Selaocoe playing his suite, Four Spirits.
This was a joyous, rousing work, Selaocoe chanting and singing as much as playing the cello. There was lots of percussion. And Selaocoe used the orchestra as a choir for extended sections.
It was wonderful!

Scottish Ballet tonight. Beautiful dancing, an impressionistic story - Mary Queen of Scots (though I had a couple of difficulties with the narrative). An an excellent score, Nyman-esque at times, forebodingly percussive at other. I loved it.
A very good show. Mary Queen of Scots is touring in the autumn, and I've half a mind to go again.

Just back from tonight's show.
I thought Orpheus & Euridyce was one of the best things I've ever seen.
If I weren't going to the ballet tomorrow, I'd get a ticket to see it again!
The Guardian gave it five stars (out of five). It deserves six!

"A coalition of determined open-source software (OSS) advocates and a handful of technology experts working in the European Commission set out in 2004 to end Microsoft's monopoly. They almost succeeded. This article reveals how they managed to change the EU's software policies, made Microsoft lobbyists work overtime - and in the end, and despite their best efforts, could not withstand the power of proprietary companies’ lobbying campaigns.
Drawing on the Multiple Streams Framework, the article explains the European Commission’s decision to promote OSS and open standards in 2004, and its puzzling decision to reverse course just a few years later, in 2010, despite its unchanged rhetoric about the benefits of openness. The analysis reveals three key factors that drove the changes in the EU’s policies.
In 2004, OSS advocates managed to frame the EU’s dependency on proprietary software as a problem – and the promotion of OSS and open standards as the solution.
In 2010, #Microsoft and other proprietary companies used their existing connections in Brussels to sow doubt about the maturity and cost of #OSS among #EU policymakers."

Is it absurd to already be excited by the programming in next year's Edinburgh Festival? The dance programme over the last couple of years had been pretty lightweight - this sounds excellent.
And the rest of the schedule sounds like it's shaping up pretty well too - I really like what Nicola Benedetti it doing!

I went to see Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra dissect Mahler 5.
It was marvellous. (Even Mahlervous!)

I saw the film of the Outrun last night, having seen the play on Tuesday. (Not a deliberate plan!)
It was good to compare the two media: the same story but told very differently. Both were excellent, and both were imaginative in their storytelling - interestingly, the play had a more linear but impressionistic timeline, the film jumped around as if pointillistic.
And Saoirse Ronan was remarkable in the film (as was her equivalent in the play).

I'm going to see this next week. And the film a couple of days later. The play because I thought I really ought to see some theatre in the Festival and I've always been impressed by Vicky Featherstone; the film because I was invited long after I had tickets for the play. It'll be interesting to compare the two!

Anoushka Shankar in the Festival tonight, with a great band including Tom Farmer and the irrepressible Arun Ghosh.
It was a really enjoyable concert - the band got a real groove going! The understanding and interaction between the musicians was remarkable - and they really seemed into each others' solos!
A brilliant evening.

And then there were two encores. Frankly I don't think Mahler needs an encore. But hey, the band let their hair down and let rip. I couldn't hear what the first encore was, but it was fun. The second was Bernstein's Mambo from West Side Story. The orchestra's go-to encore. The audience was clapping and the orchestra was dancing, literally. Great fun!

The 2nd concert by the Simon Bolivar Orchestra tonight. The first, on Thursday, was a bit disappointing: partly because my expectations are high with this orchestra, partly because they didn't seem to come together. It felt indistinct. The last movement of Beethoven 9 was tremendous.
Tonight under Dudamel was a completely different kettle drum. It's like the orchestra had not just stepped up a gear, but they'd gone into turbo drive. Everything seemed clearer, more emphatic.

CW: EIF, LSO, Shostakovich
This week is, for me at least, LSO week at EIF.
Like this review (the only one I can find, apart from a paywalled Scotsman review), I thought their performance of Shostakovich's Symphony 11 was tremendous - very powerful music, and tremendous playing all round.
And the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto 2 left me unmoved - almost too familiar.
But the Shostakovich was remarkable!
