Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #egu24, aggregated by home.social.

  1. @EuroGeosciences jsue opened abstract submissions for 2025.

That keeps us thinking about an #EGU24 session co-chaired by @middlebury-based Cluster member @jmunroe which included this poster exploring how "dust inputs become an increasingly important biogeochemical factor in such highly weathered environments."

  2. Excluding vegetation dynamics from #landscape models can lead to significant prediction errors. Integrating these factors helps better predict and manage changes in #ecosystems, particularly under #ClimateChange.

  3. Reflecting on last month's @EuroGeosciences #EGU24 and
this paper which highlights how varying stress levels can channelize groundwater flow, impacting storage and discharge mechanisms in bedrock.

  4. 💪PolarRES had a strong representation at #EGU24! Read all about the different sessions 📚, presentations 🎤 and scientific posters presented by the team 🖼️ in our new article: polarres.eu/polarresnews/polar

  5. Fascinating look at what drives #water through top #soil presented during #EGU24.

"Our study indicates that using the antecedent precipitation index as a substitute for antecedent wetness conditions may not be able to comprehensively reflect the relation between the runoff response and antecedent soil moisture conditions in the topsoil in the given catchment."

  7. It was a great last week at #egu24! We had lots of interesting meetings with scientists from everywhere, could learn a load about the needs of #datamanagement and found that #opensource software is in more demand than ever. Speaking of which, we are happy to provide top support and development for #LinkAhead!

  8. The European Geosciences Union conference #EGU24 has ended...
It had lots of great events for science communication, outreach and education and about learning to make better presentations. Here is a nice diary (including many slides from presentations) by Bärbel Winkler of SkepticalScience! skepticalscience.com/egu24-per

Hier: Sandra Chapman, University of Warwick #EGU24

  10. #EGU24 hosted by @EuroGeosciences is a wrap for me! During this intense week, I attended 15 sessions virtually, gave one oral presentation and was on the panel of a Union symposia. Once again, lots of food for thought to write about for @SkepticalScience!

  11. Here's Bärbel Winkler's final entry from #EGU24, the last day of her immersive experience in #ScienceCommunications.

There are myriad details to #ClimateSolutions and they're mostly based in science. Getting the job done needs conveying a massive amount of information into political discourse leading to public policy.

Effective communication of this enormous payload must include methodical best practice. Shots in the dark are inadequate. We know how to do better.

  12. Last day of #egu24 and there’s still many exciting presentations and posters which I could not attend.
Surviving a whole week of intensive networking is not easy for predominantly introvert, somewhat socially awkward, nerdy geoscientists. But you know you made a right career choice.

  13. Last day of #egu24! I have a talk this afternoon on some of my dissertation work called **"Catchment coevolution and the geomorphic origins of variable source area hydrology." **It looks like a great session overall, with talks covering a wide range of climate change impacts and generalisable insights from hydrological theory.

  14. Tonight we had a special event at #EGU24 in Vienna to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the journal #Biogeosciences that Jürgen Kesselmeier and I launched in 2004. Many thanks to the European Geosciences Union (EGU) @EuroGeosciences, Copernicus and Uli Poeschl for their support over the years. Long live Biogeosciences!

  15. Our key volunteer Bärbel Winkler is attending (and presenting!) at #EGU24. Thanks in no small part to lessons learned during the C-19 mess; virtuality works, here. :-)

Bärbel's keeping a journal of her conference activities and it's absolutely loaded with teasers and links with a heavy emphasis on effective #ScienceCommunications.

For those interested in promoting science-informed public policy, these posts are a great distillation.

    Here are the latest entries.

  16. First time attending #EGU24 @EuroGeosciences and it's been a lot! So many people, so much science, so many chance meetings. Really pleased to have presented my work to a packed session – thanks @PoLaRobs for moderating and thanks for all the questions from the audience!

  17. Taylor Swift isn’t the only person who includes small details for sharp-eyed viewers to enjoy.

From Cluster member @jmunroe at #EGU24:

“Enjoyed spotting the hidden R2D2 in the lower corner of the slides for this presentation about dust in Tunisia.”

  18. Want to find out more about co-design and Climate Services? Julia Kraatz explains our general approach to co-designing preoperational Climate Services in the project. Today @ 17:50, ESSI2.8 | Room G2 @EuroGeosciences

  19. Today, I presented a poster at the #EGU24 in Vienna. On behalf of my colleagues #AdamJonKronegh and #EsbenSkov and myself, I presented the actual status of our #ROPEWALK ship journal digitization project, which is a joint venture of #Rigsarkivet (the National Archive of Denmark) and #DMI, funded by A.P. Møller Fonden. More than 50 people wanted to find out how far we've got with reading the data by means of machine learning. Maybe we can go into production mode soon, so see me at #EGU25!

  20. Outtakes and variants from recent sessions generating images for #EGU24-related content.

  21. "Exploring Earth's Critical Zone Through the U.S. Critical Zone Collaborative Network" presented attendees of this #EGU24 poster session an overview of how our Dust Cluster works with and alongside the other 8 clusters in the CZ Net.

"Such collaboration is imperative for addressing pressing global environmental challenges."

  22. Good evening #EGU24 attendees.

Here's a video playlist to enjoy as you recharge your social and intellectual energy storage cells.

During the summer of 2023 one of our Cluster collaborators collected samples from the array of passive #dust collectors we maintain in the southwestern U.S.

    This is The Collectors Tour.

  23. Couldn't make our #ThwaitesGlacier press conference at #EGU24?

Great news - you can watch it online and see @iceadvice talk about exciting findings about the bed under the ice, with an additional few words from me

  24. Almost 20,000 participants, 724 lectures, around 60 workshops, the career forum: The #EGU24 conference of the European Geosciences Union, which is dedicated to the #geosciences and #environmentalsciences, is currently taking place in Vienna. Our research team is presenting the LRZ for the first time, and tomorrow Stephan Hachinger will be giving tips on how to make #bigdata and HPC datasets searchable and reusable according to the FAIR principles at the booth of @NFDI .

  25. Rendering data usable - for you and beyond your #datamanagementplan - that's why we are at #egu24. To help you make your data truly #FAIR, with the power of #opensource software: #LinkAhead #datamanagement. Versioning and role based access management included!

  26. We've been working on a massive riddle tying together #self-organization, #carbonate #diagenesis, reactive transport, #paleoclimate and #Milankovich cycles, and very stiff PDE systems.

If you've missed the poster at #egu24, you can still find it attached to the abstract in the conference program (meetingorganizer.copernicus.or) and on Zenodo zenodo.org/records/10943274 If you're into numerical methods, tricky PDEs or other aspects of #modeling, please see if you have any advice to us 😄 #solvers #PDE

  38. If you are interested in (passive) remote sensing of dust storms and attending #EGU24, you might be interested in my talk on Thursday at 17:50 (Room E2). If you are planning to attend another session, hit me up, and let's have a chat during the next few days.
We used an off-the-shelf machine-learning code and existing datasets for training to restore the spatial extent of dust plumes, which are hidden underneath clouds.
