Mehr als 1.100 Tote durch 16-tägige Hitzewelle in Spanien
In #Spanien sind laut Schätzungen von Wissenschaftlern seit Anfang August mehr als 1.100 Menschen wegen der hohen Temperaturen ums Leben gekommen. Das öffentliche Gesundheitsinstitut Carlos III meldete heute 1.149 Todesfälle, die der #Hitzewelle zwischen dem 3. und dem 18. August zuzurechnen sein. Demnach gab es im Juli bereits 1.060 #Hitzetote. Das war ein Anstieg von 50 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr.
Das Institut verglich für seine Einschätzung der hitzebedingten #Übersterblichkeit die Zahl der täglich gemeldeten Todesfälle mit historischen Vergleichsdaten, unter Berücksichtigung von Faktoren wie den extrem hohen Temperaturen.
Bis zu 45 GradSpanien kann nach den vergangenen Wochen mit Höchsttemperaturen von bis zu 45 Grad Celsius zum Wochenbeginn wieder etwas aufatmen. In einigen Regionen wurde neben kühleren Temperaturen zudem Regen erwartet.
Bei den seit Tagen wütenden Rekordwaldbränden sei die Gefahr noch nicht gebannt, warnte heute Regierungschef Pedro Sanchez. In den nordwestlichen Provinzen Zamora und Leon, in der galicischen Provinz #Ourense und in der westlichen Provinz #Caceres und in der Region #Extremadura an der Grenze zu #Portugal lodern seit einer Woche mehrere große #Brände.
In der bisher schlimmsten #Waldbrandsaison Spaniens verbrannten nach Angaben des europäischen Waldbrand-Informationssystem #Effis seit Jahresbeginn bereits 373.000 Hektar Land – so viel wie nie zuvor innerhalb eines ganzen Jahres. Vier Menschen wurden getötet.
Wissenschaftler und Wissenschaftlerinnen warnen, dass durch den #menschengemachten #Klimawandel die Häufigkeit und die Intensität von #Extremwetter'ereignissen wie #Hitzewelle'n, #Dürren und #Überschwemmungen weiter zunehmen werden.
