  1. In one of O’Brien’s recent Times stories, she reported on how employees at Lucas’s #EEOC have faced pressure to bring—or keep alive—cases against white men, even when the evidence seems weak. In one case, “employees had to justify abandoning the case of a white man who said he was the victim of #discrimination because he didn’t get a job,” O’Brien wrote. “The job, the office’s review found, went to another white man, and all the other applicants were also white men.”

The [formerly] “Equal” Employment Opportunity Commission [#EEOC] has been pursuing an inquiry into potential workplace #discrimination against #Jewish faculty & staff at #Penn, a #school in Philadelphia, since 2023. While #university officials said they welcomed the investigation, they balked last year after the government issued a subpoena seeking names & phone numbers for members of #Jewish groups on campus.

    Trump's #EEOC asked for the list last July. Penn refused, and the EEOC sued the university in November. What's new is that several groups just filed a motion in federal court to intervene in the lawsuit on the side of the university -- the American Association of University Professors (#AAUP, national and UPenn chapters), the American Academy of Jewish Research, the UPenn Jewish Law Students Association, the UPenn Association of Senior and Emeritus Faculty.

  11. As previously reported, the #EEOC even moved to dismiss its own active lawsuits against companies that had been credibly accused of discriminating against #trans & #nonbinary workers. Seawright’s complaint says that the EEOC’s internal non-discrimination & inclusion policy regarding gender identity & sexual orientation, which has existed since at least 2009, was also rescinded by Lucas.

    “Being forced to create the information technology that would systematically erase all EEOC references to transgender, non-binary, or other LGBTQ+ people, given that I am a queer transgender man, was personally devastating & contributed to a hostile work environment,” he said in his complaint.

  15. The same month, #EEOC staff were instructed that any recognition of #transgender & #nonbinary people needed to be “systematically erased” in both the EEOC’s internal & external materials, Seawright explained in a formal complaint against the agency in March, before his resignation.

    “What made it more disturbing,” he wrote, “was my forced involvement in making it happen.”

    This isn't an amazing image, just something I threw together for @nicdex to put up, because I felt that putting up Elijah #McCoy's picture reflects who we are, what we stand for, and our thoughts on the world today.

    Elijah McCoy's parents escaped from #enslavement in the #US in the early-1800s, gaining asylum in #Canada, and he was born in #Ontario in 1843. Being what we would now consider a "gifted" child, his parents saved money to send him to Scotland to study #engineering when he was 15.

    He returned to the US after the Civil War, but could not find work as an engineer due to #racism and #segregation practices: anti-#discrimination programs like #DEI and the #EEOC, had not been established, so opportunities for even the most qualified #black men were scarce, passed up for even less qualified #white men.

US has failed to engage with and join #InternationalTreaties that #protect and #defend against #ageism in the #workplace #AgeDiscrimination #Harassment #EEOC #ADEA are generally so ineffective that some turn to #litigation which is too costly for most or simply leave #employment under #duress.
