There’s also the unread counter. Anyone who has opened a feed reader and discovered 1,400 unread items knows how quickly a tool for reading can start looking like unpaid clerical work. Eventually you stop opening it because the number keeps getting worse. That isn’t a small problem, and it’s one of the reasons people abandon feed readers.

That's actually why I use #RSS. Most sites are extremely hard to keep track of, let alone when you need to hop between 40 different sites/apps to see what you follow. "It's so much easier to have everything in one social media/app", an alluring thought that is ever more dangerous with the addicting designs of social medias. With the numbers shaming me for how much my digital life is bloated, I can work to lower it into manageable levels.

Google said Reader was being shut down because usage had declined, and I have no particular reason to doubt that Reader itself had declined. But the timing is still interesting. Google was heavily invested in Google+ at the time, and Reader represented a very different idea of how people might use the web.

I also saw recently a look back at Google killing projects, and it sounded a lot like Microsoft's #EEE. Also, didn't they admit at a congress hearing that they would shadowban people during the pandemic? Where there's a practice, there may well be a repeating one, so their numbers aren't very reliable imo.

There’s a reason RSS never became the default way most people use the internet. You have to know what you want.

Usually I go the opposite way, though for my debloating strategy, but I think that works nicely: I see some community, blog, user, etc. somewhere I already use, and if I like his/her/its posts, I look for ways to have it "RSS-fied". And at that...

If you regularly read a website, there’s a decent chance it still has a feed somewhere. Sometimes it’s obvious. Sometimes you have to look for /feed, /rss, or an RSS link buried in the page source.

Plugins and services that look up, expose and/or notify when a site has RSS feeds helps a bunch too. One for example I'd recommend a lot is the browser extension RSSHub Radar.
