PS: I have a crazy idea: perhaps post-secondary should be majority-funded by government, not by exploitative international tuitions that can just *disappear*)

PPS: Domestic enrolment is not declining in any significant kind of way in the sector. From the “State of Post Secondary Education in Canada 2025” by Alex Usher:
"This decline in per-student funding is therefore not primarily a result of a significant decline in total funding; rather, it is a result of expenditures remaining more or less
constant while enrollments increased.”

This government is trying to 'rob Peter to pay Paul', attempting to pit children with different needs against each other because they don't provide the adequate supports.
They have the resources, they have to actually invest it in adequate and early supports for our children.

I raised the one example of Scoil Eoin in Crumlin, which many children from Tallaght go to.

*It's still all too common in K-12 schools.

To put the budget cuts in perspective: it's a billion euros *per year*. The amount is the equivalent of closing an entire university. Combined with inflation and higher energy prices, universities are seeing a cut in their budgets of up to 10%.

Another year begins at Vancouver Island University.
It boggles my brain a little that I am starting my 23rd year as a faculty member here at this campus. How time flies.

Add to that the 2 years I spent here as a student and I've been here continuously for 25 years. A QUARTER CENTURY.

I am always energized by the feeling of a new batch of students exploring and discovering what it is they want to pursue in their lives. (Including, now, my own daughter here!)

There is of course plenty of office politics, bureaucracy, and other less than pleasant things that challenge any workplace, especially "publicly funded*” places like this, but the people, the students, the union, the faculty, the staff, yes even the administrators, are good people working toward good things and it is a pleasure and honour to be able to say I have worked here for so long.

Wherever you are today, whether you're in the education field starting anew, or anything else, I hope you have a wonderful and productive week and year ahead.

This is the view out of my office toward the rest of campus. And my favourite poster on my wall which I got from my boss/Dean who retired last year, hanging below my long service certificate.

*publicly funded is a moniker that is more and more difficult to apply when rising student tuitions, both domestic and international, continue to fund more and more of the basic services these learning institutions provide. Education is a right and should be free and fully, publicly funded.

Is there a network where those of us outside of #Florida can offer Zoom classes in #AfricanAmericanStudies and similar fields to do an end run around around #rondesantis and his Fascist #AntiWoke laws?
