  1. I finished the Gales of November by John Bacon and it was excellent, details of the men and their jobs in the Edmund Fitzgerald and the shipping industry and the scariest Great Lake, Superior. Heartbreaking subject well explored in this book.

  8. A belated #EdmundFitzgerald thought:

Gordon Lightfoot, Canadian musician and national treasure, wrote The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald about actual events that took place in the US and went to great pains to portray them accurately and with integrity.

Can you think of any examples of an American artist of any genre or medium who made something about an exclusively Canadian historic event and did it well?

(I can't think of any, although they may exist, hence the question.)

  9. I'm not old enough to remember the sinking of the #EdmundFitzgerald, but I do remember studying it in elementary school in the late #80s and hearing this song.

  10. Canadian confession: I had no idea that Gordon Lightfoot released The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1976.

I thought the song was much, much older. Because it sounds and feels older.

But also because it's such an integral part of my experience of the soundscape of Canada that it's hard to imagine a time when it was ever not there. 1/2

  11. 2012 Legends – The Edmund Fitzgerald

In 2012, Legends Drum and Bugle Corps form Kalamazoo, Michigan, performed a show about the Edmund Fitzgerald. While Lightfoot's hit was one of the musical selections and was the main motif throughout, Legends expanded on the music and the story with other selection.

  16. Listening to "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (and raising a glass to the lost lives) and reading along with the lyrics.

Great high holy hell, Gordon Lightfoot knocked this entire thing *out of the park!* The guitars make you feel like you're out on the waves in a lonely and ominous wind, and practically every verse has at least 2 bits of heart-stopping poetry that'd be the crown jewel of any other song. 1/3

  24. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is a 1976 #hitSong written, composed and performed by the Canadian singer-songwriter #GordonLightfoot to memorialize the sinking of the bulk carrier SS #EdmundFitzgerald in #LakeSuperior on November 10, 1975. Lightfoot considered this song to be his finest work. Appearing originally on his 1976 album #SummertimeDream, Lightfoot re-recorded the song in 1988 for the compilation album #GordsGoldVol2.
